Valley Girls’ Soccer Qualifies for States; Boys’ Soccer Gets a Split
Girls’ Soccer
The Valley Regional girls’ soccer qualified for the Class M State Tournament by earning a 1-0 victory at East Hampton last week. The Warriors also took a loss to Cromwell and now have an overall record of 6-3-2 with a mark of 4-1-2 in the Shoreline Conference.
Valley began the week by dropping a 2-1 contest in Cromwell on Oct. 7. Senior Sam Calamari scored an unassisted goal for the Warriors in the game.
Five days later, the Warriors were on the road to face East Hampton and claimed a 1-0 win to qualify for states. Senior Ava Duval netted the lone goal of the game on an assist from Calamari to lift Valley to the victory.
Boys’ Soccer
Valley took a road loss to Coginchaug and then prevailed in a home game with East Hampton last week. The Warriors moved to 6-4 on the year with these results.
Valley was on the road to face Coginchaug on Oct. 7 and lost the game by the final score of 3-0. The Blue Devils held a 2-0 lead at halftime and then added a goal in the second half on their way to the victory. Sophomore goalie Ian Silva made six saves in net for Valley.
Then on Oct. 12, the Warriors hosted East Hampton and notched a 2-0 victory against the Bellringers. Valley scored both of its goals during the first half. In the 10th minute, senior Cameron Frazier put Valley on the board when he scored a goal from sophomore Jake Burdick. Then in the 24th minute, Burdick gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead when he scored following a throw-in from junior Kennan Pindar. Silva came up with 10 saves to get the shutout in goal for Head Coach Mick Fearon’s club.
Field Hockey
The Warriors improved to 6-5 after winning two of their three road games last week. Valley defeated Morgan, lost to Westbrook, and then beat Litchfield in last week’s contests.
On Oct. 7, Valley notched a 1-0 victory over Morgan at the Indian River Complex in Clinton. Then on Oct. 11, the Warriors were back on the road to play Westbrook and dropped a 1-0 decision versus the Knights. Two days later, Valley defeated Litchfield by a 3-0 score on the road.
Football
The Valley Regional-Old Lyme football team hosted the Coventry-Windham Tech-Bolton-Lyman Memorial co-op squad for a Saturday afternoon matchup at Blythe Field on Oct. 12. The Warriors took a 28-14 defeat against the Patriots in a Pequot Conference interdivision contest to move to 2-3 on the season.
Valley-Old Lyme is on the bye week for Week 6. The Warriors will return to action when they square off with North Branford in a Pequot Conference Sassascus Division showdown on Friday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Colafati Field in North Branford. The Thunderbirds enter the game with an overall record of 2-2 and are 2-0 in the Sassascus. Valley has a record of 2-1 in divisional play to go with its overall mark of 2-3.
