East Haven Football Posts 34-28 Victory Versus Guilford; Girls’ Soccer Edges out Hamden

The Yellowjackets’ football team improved to 4-0 after posting a 34-28 home victory over Guilford in an SCC Tier 3 matchup at Frank Crisafi Field on Oct. 5. East Haven totaled more than 500 yards of offense, including 426 rushing yards, on its way to defeating the Indians, who also came into the game at 3-0.
On East Haven’s first series of the game, junior Dave Amatruda took an option run 65 yards to the house to put the Yellowjackets on the board. Junior Eric Araujo kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. Guilford scored a TD before the end of the first quarter to tie the game, but junior Alex Duarte gave the Easties a 14-7 lead when he punched in a 4-yard TD run early in the second quarter. Guilford tied the game again, but Araujo put East Haven up 21-14 at the half when he scored on a 2-yard TD plunge.
The Yellowjackets took a 28-14 lead when Araujo ran in a 3-yard score, but the Indians came back with a touchdown to cut it to 28-21. East Haven responded when junior quarterback Trey Garea connected with senior Kaymond Quattlebaum for a 71-yard touchdown pass to give East Haven a 34-21 lead through three quarters. Guilford scored a late TD to make it a one-score game, but the Yellowjackets hung on for the 34-28 victory to improve to 4-0 for the second-consecutive season.
Garea ran the ball eight times for 164 yards and also went 2-of-3 passing for 80 yards in the win. Araujo rushed eight times for 86 yards, Amatruda finished with 67 yards, and Duarte had 50 yards on the ground. Along with Quattlebaum’s big TD catch, senior captain Jake Marquardt added a nine-yard reception for East Haven.
East Haven has a bye week for Week 5. The Yellowjackets will host New Fairfield in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18.
Girls’ Soccer
The Yellowjackets split a pair of matchups last week to move to 2-4-2 this year. East Haven visited Branford on Sept. 30 and dropped a 2-0 decision, but rebounded with a 3-2 home victory versus Hamden on Oct. 4.
Junior Bella Pilato scored East Haven’s first goal on an assist from sophomore Emily Pycela in the Hamden win. Pycela had the assist when freshman Gianna Mendez scored the Easties’ second goal of the game. Sophomore Kate Pycela netted the game-winning goal for the Yellowjackets on an assist from Pilato.
Boys’ Soccer
East Haven lost three games last week and now has a record of 0-7.
The Yellowjackets took an 8-0 loss to Lyman Hall on Sept. 30, lost a 4-0 contest versus Notre Dame-West Haven on Oct. 2, and then took a 7-0 defeat against West Haven on Oct. 4 in last week’s action.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The East Haven-Cross co-op squad took a pair of narrow defeats last week and is now 0-5 this season. On Sept. 30, the Yellowjackets lost to Sheehan by the score of 94-87 on the road. Then on Oct. 3, East Haven-Cross took an 87-81 home loss to Hamden at the East Haven Town Pool.
Against Hamden, sophomore Isabella Orozco set a new personal- best time in the 50 freestyle by clocking in at 35.08 seconds. Junior April Adkins made her debut in the 50 freestyle and finished with a time of 38.46. Senior Syreena Melendez recorded a personal-best mark in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:10.14.
