Local Duo Represents Valley Shore Marlins at Long Course Championships
Two swimmers from the Valley Shore YMCA Marlins qualified to compete at the Connecticut Long Course Age Group Championships for swimmers aged 14 and under. The Long Course Championship meet was held at the Cheshire Community Pool from July 27-28.
During the long-course season, swimmers compete in an Olympic-style pool with a length of 50 meters. Old Saybrook resident Jonah Kehew, 14, made it to the championship by swimming the qualifying long-course time in both the 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter backstroke in the boys’ 14-and-under age group. Lucca Giordano, 11, of Essex qualified for the meet in the 50-meter butterfly for the 11-12 age group.
The 2019-’20 short-course season, in which swimmers compete in a 25-yard pool, will begin on Monday, Sept. 9. Tryouts for anyone interested in joining the Marlins will take place from 5 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at the Valley Shore YMCA at 201 Spencer Plain Rd. in Westbrook.
