Post 83 Seniors Get Wins Over Wallingford and Cheshire; Prep Legion Edges Out Meriden

The Branford Senior American Legion baseball team came away with two victories while playing six Zone 2 games last week. Post 83 claimed a win over Wallingford, lost two of three in a series against Cheshire, and was swept by Hamden in a doubleheader. Branford has a record of 9-12 in Zone 2 play entering the final week of the regular season.
Branford started off last week by notching a 5-2 road victory against Wallingford in a battle of Zone 2 Eastern Division foes at Pat Wall Field on July 8. Eddie Zanor earned the win on the mound by pitching five strong innings and striking out four for Post 83. Alphonse Suppa had a big day at the plate for Branford, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Carson Mendoza also had two hits, while Carter Shannon came through with an RBI single in a key spot.
The next day, Post 83 posted a 7-0 shutout over Cheshire in an Eastern Division game at Branford High School. Zane Kmietek tossed a complete game by pitching all seven innings to lead Branford to the victory.
On July 10, Post 83 was on the road to face Cheshire and dropped a 5-0 decision. The day after that, Branford took an 8-3 home loss to Cheshire in the rubber game of the series.
Then on July 13, Branford lost both ends of a home doubleheader against Hamden. Post 83 took a 5-1 loss in the opener and dropped a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.
During the previous week’s action, Branford notched a 6-5 victory over Zone 2 rival East Haven. Kmietek picked up the win on the mound by tossing 4.1 innings for Post 83. Suppa had two hits and a pair of RBI, while Zach Vandale added two hits to go with a run and a stolen base. Jake McPartland delivered a clutch pinch-hit RBI single to help Branford come away with the victory.
Prep Legion
The Branford Prep Legion baseball team earned a one-run victory versus Meriden that was sandwiched between a few defeats last week. Post 83 has an overall record of 2-13 on the year.
On July 6, Branford lost both ends of a doubleheader against non-zone opponent Ridgefield at Totoket Field. Post 83 took a 15-1 defeat in the first game and lost by an 11-6 final in the nightcap. The next day, Post 83 recorded an 8-7 home victory over Meriden in a Zone 2 matchup at Branford High School.
On June 9, Branford hosted Naugatuck and took a 21-1 defeat in a non-conference game at Totoket Field. The following day, Post 83 lost by the final score of 14-5 in a road game versus Meriden at Maloney High School.
