East Haven Softball Qualifies for Class L Bracket; Golf Sees Nice Week on the Links
Softball
The East Haven softball team won three games last week to improve to 9-7 and clinch a berth in the Class L State Tournament. Two of the Yellowjackets’ wins came against SCC Housatonic Division rivals Branford and North Haven, putting the club’s record at 6-2 in divisional play for the year.
On May 6, East Haven routed Branford by the final score of 16-2 on the road. Freshman Emilee Bishop pitched a complete game in which she scattered six hits and struck out five to earn the victory. Junior Becky Flynn had four hits, including a double and a triple, to go with three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Tori Heaphy collected three hits and scored four runs, while freshman Magdalena Barthel had three hits, two of which were triples, to go with two RBI.
East Haven punched its postseason ticket by notching a 6-3 victory versus North Haven on May 8. Senior Jaime Gallo hit a two-run double in the fourth inning, sophomore Sammie Franceschi belted a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth, and freshman Jilien Ayala knocked in two runs during the sixth. Barthel and Flynn had two hits each, plus Heaphy had three hits for East Haven. Heaphy also picked up the victory on the hill by fanning six batters in a complete-game effort.
On May 10, the Yellowjackets took a 6-3 loss at West Haven. Heaphy, Ayala, Flynn, and sophomore Kayla Rosario each had one hit, while Brooke Clancy added a hit with an RBI.
The following afternoon, the Easties traveled to Groton to face Fitch and prevailed by an 11-1 final. Heaphy allowed just five hits in another complete-game performance to go with six strikeouts. Flynn had three hits, including a triple, and drove home five runs. Barthel had four hits, including a three-bagger, and drove in three runs for the Yellowjackets.
Baseball
East Haven moved to 9-8 after winning one of its three games last week.
On May 7, the Yellowjackets took an 8-7 loss against SCC Hammonasset Division opponent Notre Dame-West Haven. East Haven held a 7-3 lead through five innings, but Notre Dame scored five runs in the top of the sixth to get the win and take the division title. Senior captain Jack Kabel pitched five solid innings for East Haven. Junior Jake Marquardt hit a pair of home runs and also had a double to go with five RBI. Junior Mike Streeto also homered for the Easties, who saw senior Robert Garcia get two hits, including a double, with two runs scored.
The next afternoon, East Haven earned a 10-3 victory against divisional opponent Law to finish at 6-2 in the Hammonasset. Sophomore Nick Furino earned the win on the mound for the Yellowjackets. Kabel had three hits, including a double, with three RBI, while senior captains Steve Mingione, Nate Furino, and fellow senior Hunter Santana had two hits apiece in the victory.
The Yellowjackets closed out their week by dropping a 2-1 contest versus Shelton on May 10. Senior Gianni Mumford’s solo home run supplied the only run for East Haven in the defeat. Mumford took the loss on the mound despite giving up just three hits in the game.
Golf
East Haven improved to 8-6-1 by winning three of its five matchups in recent action.
The Yellowjackets posted a 220-224 road victory against North Branford at Indian Springs Golf Club on May 6. Junior Logan Hamilton earned medalist honors by shooting a low round of 49 for East Haven. Freshman Norah Rome finished with a 50, fellow freshman Nick Sorrentino shot a 53, and junior Alexis Pendziwater scored a 58. Sophomore Andrew Zito shot a 60, while senior Jon Moscato finished with a 63.
Two days later, East Haven took on Guilford, Cross, and Hillhouse at Alling Memorial Golf Club. East Haven shot a 201 as a team to defeat Hillhouse (218), while taking losses against Guilford (155) and Cross (195). Senior Nick Giglietti shot a 48, Rome and Sorrentino both finished with a 50, andunior Shane Hanson shot a 53.
On May 9, East Haven finished its week by recording a 193-245 victory against Career at Alling Memorial. Sorrentino was the match medalist with his score of 40. Giglietti shot a 49, Hanson had a score of 51, Pendziwater scored 53, Rome finished with a 55, and junior Enzo Bunce turned in a 57.
Boys’ Tennis
East Haven came away with one win in its four matches last week and is now 3-15 this season.
On May 6, East Haven took a 6-1 loss to Sheehan. Senior captain Joe Brown and sophomore Matt DiVito rallied for a 6-3, 4-6, 12-7 victory at the No. 1 doubles position for the Yellowjackets.
The following afternoon, East Haven hosted Cross and won by a 5-2 score. Senior captain Dan Murtagh claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Mateusz Wiszniewski posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. East Haven swept the doubles matches as the top pairing of Brown and DiVito prevailed 6-1, 6-1; the No. 2 team of sophomore Gabriel Olszewski and junior Fabricio Bugatti earned a 6-1, 6-3 win; and the No. 3 team of sophomores Matt Battaglino and Devon Lopes notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
East Haven dropped a 5-2 decision against Law on May 8 and then lost to Cheshire by a 7-0 score on May 10.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
East Haven finished its regular season at 3-9 after taking a 91-59 home defeat versus Cross on May 7.
Senior Evan Damian won the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15:52, while fellow senior Ryan Cordova claimed victory in the javelin with a throw 109 feet-8 inches. Junior Ian Loehman took first in the 300 intermediate hurdles (44.50), and junior Nate Santos was victorious in the long jump (19-5).
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Yellowjackets lost to Cross by the score of 95-54 in their regular-season finale on May 7. East Haven posted a record of 5-7 on the year.
Sophomore Kisha Francois won three individual events for East Haven. Francois finished first in the 100 with a time 12.3 seconds, took first in the 200 at 26.5, and claimed top honors in the long jump by reaching 16 feet-3.5 inches. Junior Bella Ragaini won the javelin with a throw of 89-4, while freshman Morgan D’Auria reached 6-6 in the pole vault to take first place.
