Morgan Boys’ Tennis Sweeps Week; Baseball and Softball Grab One Win Apiece
Boys’ Tennis
The Morgan boys’ tennis team went undefeated last week, not relinquishing a single match in two decisions on the slate. The Huskies improved their record to 6-2 on the year as they picked up wins against a pair of Shoreline Conference opponents.
On April 16, Morgan played host to Valley Regional and grabbed a 7-0 win over the Warriors. Chris Nuzzo earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 1 singles match, while Garrett Johnson netted a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot. Paddy Murray swept his way to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 3 position, and JP Nye did the same with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 spot. In the No. 5 match, Sean Arribas Cockley only lost a single game with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
On the doubles end, Isaac Alder and Calvin Jackson got the victory at the No. 1 spot by default, and the duo of Tyler Greenhouse and Zach Johnson got the same result at the No. 2 position.
Two days later, the Huskies headed to Durham where they earned another 7-0 victory, this time against Coginchaug. Nuzzo (6-1, 6-3); Johnson (6-2, 6-3); Murray (6-0, 6-1); Nye (6-0, 6-2); and Arribas Cockley (6-1, 6-0) supplied wins in the singles matches. On the doubles courts, Adler and Zach Johnson got a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 1 position. Logan Cummings and Greenhouse took the No. 2 match by default.
Girls’ Tennis
Morgan played a single match last week, which it lost. With the defeat the Huskies’ record drops to 2-6 on the year. On April 16, Morgan traveled to Deep River to face Valley Regional in a Shoreline Conference match up. The Huskies lost the match by a score of 7-0.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Huskies lost two games in two chances last week. With the losses, Head Coach Bill Lindsay’s team moved to 3-4 on the year.
On April 16, Morgan lost a 15-7 road game against Old Saybrook. The Rams out shot the Huskies 34-26 in the match. Maddie Stopkoski led Morgan in scoring with three goals to go along with an assist. Lindsay Narracci supplied two goals and one assist, while Erin Lindsay notched one goal and one assist. Aryn McQuarrie also provided one goal and one assist in the loss.
Two days later, Morgan took a narrow 9-8 defeat in tense battle at home against another Shoreline Conference opponent in Old Lyme. The Huskies took 29 shots to Old Lyme’s 19 shots, but the Wildcats still ultimately prevailed in the game.
Stopkoski supplied most of the firepower on offense for the Huskies with five goals and one assist. Narracci (2 goals) and McQuarrie (1 goal) both hit the back of the net in the loss, and Joelle Vuilleumier added an assist.
Baseball
The Huskies had three games on the schedule last week and scored a single win in those contests. With the win and two losses, Morgan’s record moved to 2-7 on the season.
On April 16, the Huskies lost a 7-2 home game to Coginchaug. The next day, Morgan headed to Cromwell and took a 7-2 defeat in the road matchup. On April 18, the Huskies picked up their second win of the season with a 3-0 road victory over St. Bernard.
Softball
Morgan played three contests last week and won one of them. Head Coach Scott Chidsey’s squad moved to a 3-7 record on the season with the week’s results.
On April 16, the Huskies hosted Coginchaug and lost an 8-1 contest against the Blue Devils. The next day, Morgan headed to Cromwell and dropped a 14-2 road game versus the Panthers. On April 19, the Huskies fought for a 12-10 home win against Hamden.
