Yellowjackets Walk Off Versus Foran, Edge Prep; Pane Gets Win Against Cheshire

Baseball

The East Haven baseball team played three home games last week and came away with a pair of victories to improve to 5-2 on the season. The Yellowjackets defeated both Foran and Fairfield Prep by identical 3-2 scores, before taking a 14-6 defeat versus Watertown to close out their week.

On April 16, East Haven claimed a 3-2, eight-inning victory versus Foran in walk-off fashion. The Yellowjackets won the game when Mike O’Connor drove in fellow junior Noah Danz in the bottom of the eighth. Senior captain Jack Kabel started on the mound and allowed just one hit, while striking out 14 batters. Fellow senior captain Nate Furino earned the win in relief. Senior Gianni Mumford hit a two-run double in the third inning for East Haven.

The next afternoon, sophomore Nick Furino tossed a complete game as East Haven topped Fairfield Prep by a 3-2 score. Senior Giro Esposito had two RBI and also made a game-saving catch in the seventh inning to help preserve the victory for the Yellowjackets, who improved to 2-0 in SCC Hammonasset action with the win.

Then on April 18, East Haven took a 14-6 loss to Watertown in a non-conference game. Senior Hunter Santana and junior Jake Marquardt each had two hits.

Girls’ Tennis

East Haven played one match last week and dropped a 6-1 decision against Cheshire at home. The Yellowjackets have a record of 2-4 this season.

East Haven’s lone victory versus Cheshire came at the No. 1 singles position, where senior captain Jenna Pane netted a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Boys’ Tennis

The Yellowjackets dropped two decisions in last week’s matches. East Haven lost to Xavier by a 7-0 final in a road match on April 16. The next day, East Haven hosted Hand and took a 7-0 defeat.
