03/22/2019 12:00 AMAfter enjoying a successful career as a swimmer at Guilford High School, 2017 graduate Corey Gambardella is seeing continued success at the collegiate level at Indiana University, where he recently helped the Hoosiers win the Big Ten title for the second consecutive year.
Gambardella, a sophomore, took fifth place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:42.67 at the Big Ten Championships that were held in Iowa City, Iowa from Feb. 27 through March 2. He also swam a time of 47.15 seconds to place 18th in the 100 butterfly, while helping Indiana defend its conference crown. The Hoosiers won the Big Ten title after finishing their regular season with an undefeated record for the second year in a row.
The next competition for Gambardella is the NCAA Championships, which are taking place in Austin, Texas from Wednesday, March 27 through Saturday, March 30. Gambardella is studying media production with a specialization in documentary filming at Indiana.
Gambardella competed for the Branford-Guilford boys’ swimming and diving team for three seasons when he was in high school. He took first place at the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship four times during his high school career. In his senior year, Gambardella finished first in the 100 butterfly at both the Class LL State Championship and the State Open Championship, setting a state record at the Open with his time of 48.14 seconds.
In 2016, Gambardella competed in the 200 butterfly at the United States Olympic Team Trails in Men’s Swimming in Omaha, Nebraska. Gambardella finished in 47th place out of 81 athletes by posting a time of 2:01.96.
