Guilford Girls’ Hockey Sees Season End in SCCs; LaRose Wrestles at the State Open
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Guilford girls’ ice hockey team took a defeat in the postseason last week to conclude its campaign with an overall record of 10-10.
Guilford was the No. 6 seed in the Southern Connecticut Conference South Division Tournament and took a 5-3 loss against No. 3 seed Amity-North Haven-Cheshire in a first-round matchup at Lou Astorino Ice Arena on Feb. 18. Maddie Epke scored two goals for the Indians, and Daniella Vickerman also had a goal. Vickerman recorded two assists for Guilford, while Audrey Rowan and Olivia Gill had one assist apiece. Indians’ goalie Brielle Kendrioski made 22 saves in the game.
Epke earned All-SCC Second Team honors for Guilford after finishing the year with a total of 43 points. The Indians improved upon last season’s win total by three victories in their first season with Head Coach Rick Binkowski.
Wrestling
Keldon LaRose competed for the Indians in the 132-pound weight class at the State Open Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Feb. 22-23. LaRose scored four points for Guilford to put the team in a tie for 70th place at the meet.
LaRose started off by pinning Seymour’s Anthony Deicicchi at the 3:14 mark. In his next bout, LaRose lost a 15-2 decision against Devin Matthews of Gilbert. LaRose then took a 3-1 defeat via decision to Caleb Ferland from Ellis Tech in his final match.
Girls’ Basketball
Guilford is the No. 21 seed in the Class L State Tournament and opened the draw by playing a first-round game at No. 12 seed Foran (12-8) Monday. Feb. 25 (after press time). With a victory, the Indians (9-12) would either play at No. 5 East Haven or host No. 28 Stratford in a second-round contest on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. The Class L quarterfinals are on Monday, March 4; the semis take place on Friday, March 8; and the Class L state final will be held at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville on either Saturday, March 17 or Sunday, March 18.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
After recently finishing its regular season, the Branford-Guilford boys’ swimming and diving team is opening up the postseason this week. The Hornets competed at the SCC Swimming Qualifying at the Cheshire Community Pool on Feb. 25 (after press time). The SCC Swimming Championship took place at Southern Connecticut State University on Feb. 27 (after press time). After that, Branford-Guilford will be participating in the State Championship meets. The Class L Diving State Championship takes place at Middletown High School at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6; the Class L Swimming State Qualifying is at East Hartford High School at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 9: and the Class L Swimming State Championship will be held on Monday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Southern Connecticut State University.
