Morgan Girls’ Hoops Headed to States; Boys One Win Away
Girls’ Basketball
The Morgan girls’ basketball team earned wins over Guilford and Westbrook last week to improve to 9-3 on the season and qualify for the Class M State Tournament. The two victories also extended the Huskies’ win streak to four straight games as they make their way into the latter half of the season.
On Jan. 14, the Huskies picked up a 43-31 road victory over Guilford to make states. Morgan battled through the first half and held a 19-16 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, Morgan’s offense clicked, while the defense played stingy, resulting in a 33-21 lead through three. Morgan held off the Indians in the fourth quarter to come away with the 12-point victory.
Catie Donadio led Morgan with 15 points to go along with three steals, two blocks, and three assists. Becca Shamp recorded 11 points with nine rebounds, and Joelle Vuilleumier had eight points, two blocks, and two boards for the Huskies. Leah McComisky had four blocks and six rebounds, while Kylee Clifton provided four boards, four assists, three steals, and three blocks.
On Jan. 18, Morgan secured a 42-22 road victory against Westbrook. With the game tied at 11, the Huskies outscored Westbrook 12-2 in the second quarter to take a 23-13 into halftime. Morgan increased its lead in the second half and finished the night with a 20-point win.
Donadio reeled off her second consecutive 15-point game and also added six rebounds, three assists, and one block. Shamp collected 13 rebounds, while Clifton had five rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Vuilleumier netted 10 points to go with six boards and two assists. McComiskey had eight points with three rebounds and three steals in the win.
Boys’ Basketball
The Huskies won a 63-35 decision over Westbrook in their lone game last week. The Huskies hosted Westbrook on Jan. 17 and defeated the Knights to improve to 7-3 on the year. Morgan is one win shy of qualifying for the Division V State Tournament.
Morgan opened the game by scoring the first 21 points of the night against Westbrook. The Huskies held the Knights to just three field goals in the first half to take a 39-12 halftime lead on their way to the 28-point victory. Senior Chris Nuzzo led all scorers with 18 points and recorded his second-straight double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds. Garrett Johnson had 15 points, two rebounds, and two assists, while Robbie Zirlis scored 10 points and had six boards for Morgan.
Girls’ Indoor Track
Morgan took part in the Haddam-Killingworth Invitational at the Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 18. The Huskies finished seventh out of 25 teams by scoring 28 points in the meet.
Top finishers for Morgan included a fourth-place finish from the 4x200 relay of Alyssa LeMay, Clara Franzoni, Madison Corgan, and Carley Schmidt, who ran a time of 1:55.04. The 1,600 sprint medley relay team of Sydney Church, Kayla Pollard, Franzoni, and Maura Kelly also took fourth place by posting a time of 4:50.25. Olivia McCray placed fourth in the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.83.
Boys’ Indoor Track
The Huskies scored 10 points to finish in 17th place out of 28 teams at the Haddam-Killingworth Invitational on Jan. 18. The top performance for Morgan came from its 1,600 sprint medley relay team of Ryan Caldwell, Ryan Warner, Calvin Jackson, and Chayse Lofgren, who came in fourth place with a time of 3:57.73.
