Huskies’ Boys’ Soccer Posts Two Lopsided Wins; Volleyball Also Takes Two
Boys’ Soccer
The Morgan boys’ soccer team picked up two more wins last week to improve to 6-1-1 on the season. The Huskies posted a 4-0 shutout versus Old Lyme and then blanked Westbrook by the final score of 7-0.
On Sept. 24, Morgan claimed a 4-0 victory in Old Lyme. Senior David Saturno recorded a hat trick for Morgan as the Huskies cruised to victory. Saturno got the scoring started by scoring a goal just four minutes into the game on an assist from junior Zach Tuccitto. Four minutes later, Saturno struck again off a helper from junior Josh Kennedy. In the second half, Tuccitto scored an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute. Then 15 minutes later, Saturno scored on another Tuccitto assist to complete the hat trick. Morgan peppered Old Lyme with 26 shots on net, while the Wildcats only managed five shots on goal. Junior Nick Rubino made three saves in net for the Huskies, whose defense stifled Old Lyme’s attack.
Three days later, Morgan hosted Westbrook at the Indian River Complex and defeated the Knights 7-0. Saturno, who had five assists in the win, got out to another fast start by scoring a goal just five minutes into the first half off an assist from fellow senior Jhonnyer Paida. Tuccitto put the ball into the net five minutes later on an helper from senior Calvin Jackson. Then in the 14th minute, senior Neick Muratori notched a goal off an assist from Saturno. Ten minutes later, Tuccitto pocketed his second goal of the game on a Saturno assist. Senior Matt Zoner added with a goal in the 36th minute on yet another assist by Saturno. After that, Matt Koziy scored the Huskies’ final two goals in the 44th and 46th minutes, respectively, with both coming on assists from Saturno. Rubino was in goal for Morgan, which outshot Westbrook 17-2.
Volleyball
The Morgan volleyball squad notched two wins and also took a loss in last week’s action. The Huskies now stand at 5-3 this year.
On Sept. 24, the Huskies lost a 3-0 home match (25-11, 25-23, 25-14) against Coginchaug. Junior Charlotte Davenport led Morgan had four kills and four aces to go with nine receptions and four blocks. Fellow junior Mahoney also had four kills to go with seven blocks, while senior Ashley Baldwin had 18 receptions, six digs, and an assist. Senior Nikole Salinas had 10 digs, five blocks, three kills, and one ace in the loss.
Two days later, Head Coach Jessica Lynch’s squad secured a 3-2 win in Cromwell. Morgan took the first set by a 25-13 score, but Cromwell turned the tables in the second set with a 25-14 win. The third set proved evenly matched, but the Panthers ultimately took the win, 25-21. The Huskies rallied in the fourth set and took it by a commanding 25-10 margin. Then in the final set, Morgan earned a 16-14 win to take the match.
On Sept. 28, the Huskies swept Old Lyme by a 3-0 score to close out the week.
Field Hockey
Morgan played three games last week and came away with a tie and two losses to move to 2-3-1 for the year.
On Sept. 24, the Huskies headed to Sacred Heart Academy, where they took a 2-0 defeat against the Sharks. Two days later, Morgan hosted Old Saybrook at the Indian River Complex and the teams played to a 2-2 stalemate. Then on Sept. 28, the Huskies hosted Valley Regional and prevailed 5-1 in a game that was originally scheduled to take place at the Warriors’ home field.
