Guilford Boys’ Soccer Blanks Masuk in Opener; Girls Earn 2-2 Tie with Cheshire

The Guilford boys’ soccer team started off its campaign on a triumphant note by posting a shutout victory versus Masuk last week.
The Indians traveled to Masuk and blanked the Panthers by a 2-0 final on Sept. 8. Eric LePeak tallied both goals for Guilford in the victory.
Last season, Head Coach Joe Maher’s squad advanced to the semifinals in the Class L State Tournament and took a 1-0 defeat versus Hand. The Indians, who also qualified for the SCC Tournament, finished their year with an overall record of 17-3-1.
Girls’ Soccer
The Indians kicked off 2018 with a road game against Cheshire last week. Guilford battled the Rams to a 2-2 draw on Sept. 7.
In the 2017 season, Head Coach Scott McMahon and the Indians finished 8-3-5 on the regular season and claimed the SCC Hammonasset Division crown. In the SCC Tournament, Guilford took a 2-0 quarterfinal loss to Shelton. Then in the Class L State Tournament, the Indians outlasted Masuk, 1-0, in a game that went to penalty kicks, where Guilford prevailed by a 4-3 margin. The Indians wound up finishing at 9-5-5 overall after taking a 2-1 double-overtime loss to top-seeded RHAM in the second round of states.
Field Hockey
The Indians began their year by hosting non-conference foe Stonington on Sept. 8. Guilford dropped a 4-3 decision to Stonington in its season opener.
Last fall, the Indians compiled a mark of 13-2-1 during a regular season that saw them deal eventual SCC and Class M champion Hand its only loss on the year. In the SCC Tournament, Head Coach Kitty Palmer’s squad defeated Scared Heart Academy 4-0 in the quarterfinals, before taking a 1-0 semifinal loss against Branford. Then for the state draw, Guilford blanked Lauralton Hall (2-0) and Avon (6-0) to reach the semis, where the Indians dropped a 2-1 contest to Hand to finish the year at 16-4-1 overall.
