09/04/2018 12:00 AMMadison Little League (MLL) saw a plehtora of success on the ballfield this summer as four teams from the program won their respective District 9 titles. MLL saw a championship victory from its 10-U All-Star softball squad, as well as its 10-U, 11-U, and 12-U All-Star baseball teams. Additionally, the 10-U softball team and the 12-U baseball team both went on to win the title in their respective Section 3 tournaments.
The MLL 10-U baseball team won its District 9 championship by posting an 8-1 victory over Clinton at Duval Field in Haddam on July 11. In pool play, Madison defeated Coginchaug (16-0), East Hampton (18-2), Guilford (2-0), and Coginchaug (26-0) to advance out of pool B to play pool A champion Clinton in a best-of-3 series. Madison defeated Clinton by a 14-0 score in Game 1, before clinching the championship with the 8-1 victory.
Madison had a record of 6-0 and outscored its opponents 90-3 to earn the title. As the District 9 champion, Madison was one of 12 teams in the state that advanced to the Section 3 Tournament, where it faced District 10 winner East Lyme and District 7 champion West Hartford. Madison went 2-0 in Section 3 pool play with a 6-0 win versus East Lyme and a 7-3 triumph against West Hartford. Madison then took a 7-4 loss to East Lyme in the championship game to complete its run with an overall record of 8-1.
Members of the team were Stone Leckey, Jonas Markovitz, Tommy Volz, Drew Horn, Brendan Riordan, Drew Catala, Clay Cosgriff, Colin Menard, Cal Davies, Ayden Brennan, Bobby Reh, Ty Forti, and Alex Khacharian. Madison’s manager was Teg Cosgriff, who was assisted by coaches Colin Davies and Marc Markovitz.
The MLL 10-U softball team won both its District 9 and Section 3 titles. The team received important contributions from every member of the roster on its way to compiling an 11-2 record and outscoring its opponents 138-37 in the tournaments. The team’s season concluded with a 5-1 loss against eventual state champion Milford and a 7-6, nine-inning defeat versus Seymour.
Team members include Izzy Bowler, Phoebe Brennan, Erin Cerny, Julia Gallo, Grace Hall, Sophie Hurtgen, Alexis Kuszpa, Shea Looby, Antoinette Lowy, Bianca Pasquinelli, Danielle Phelan, Julianna Picard, and Alexa Young.
Madison’s 11-U baseball team finished with a record of 4-0 for postseason play this summer. Madison scored wins over Coginchaug (12-5), East Hampton (13-1), and Guilford (14-6), before defeating Cromwell (10-0) in the final on July 8.
Madison’s team was led by Trevor Cash, Paul Calandrelli, Aidan Doyle, Gavin Doyle, Chase Geremia, Nicholas Maynard, Alexander Modica, Shailen Pathy, Will Patla, Johnny Reh, Morris Selmani, and Rocco Zagami.
The MLL 12-U baseball team captured its District 9 title by defeating Killingworth 3-1 in the championship game. The team had a record of 7-0 during its tourney run, outscoring its opponents 64-9 along the way. In the championship game, Hudson Geremia pitched a gem by giving up only five hits and striking out nine to notch his fourth win of the tournament. Kyle Hoffman came in to get the save for Madison. All of Madison’s offense came in one inning as Troy Piascik got a big hit that drove in Nicholas Antonetti, Ben Kuja, and Christian Kells.
The team then moved on to the Section 3 Tournament. After taking a 10-3 loss to Newington, Madison recorded a dramatic come-from-behind victory by scoring two runs in the sixth inning to earn a 10-9 win against Mystic, setting up a rematch against Newington in the sectional final. Once again, Madison came from behind by plating two runs in the sixth to defeat Newington 4-3 and move on to the state’s Final Four. Unfortunately, Madison lost consecutive games to Manchester and Wallingford to end its championship run. This team was the only second team in MLL history to advance that fare in the 12-U State Tournament for Little League baseball.
