Finkeldey Vaults to 2nd Place at State Open and New Englands; Old Saybrook Golf Takes 3rd in Division IV Championship
Girls’ Outdoor Track
Senior Tyra Finkeldey claimed second place in the pole vault at both the State Open Championship and the New England Championship for Old Saybrook last week.
At the State Open, Finkeldey’s height of 11 feet-6 inches earned her runner-up honors behind Southington’s Megan Biscoglio, who tied the meet record by clearing 12-6 at Willow Brook Park on June 4. Finkeldey’s finish also scored eight points for the Old Saybrook girls’ outdoor track team at the Open, where the Rams finished 32nd overall.
Then on June 9, Finkeldey cleared 11 feet-3 inches to finish second at the New England Championship at the University of New Hampshire.
Previously this postseason, Finkeldey won first place in the pole vault at the Class S State Championship meet with a height of 11 feet. She cleared that same height when she won the event at the Shoreline Conference Championship the previous week.
Elsewhere at the Open, senior Annea Thaci claimed 12th place in the triple jump with a distance of 33-9 and finished 22nd in the 100 hurdles at 17.20 seconds for Old Saybrook. The Rams’ 4x800 relay team of sophomore Allison Cody, junior Tehra Givehand, junior Jessica Stratton, and freshman Emily Stratton finished in 17th place with a time of 10:10.28.
Sophomore Cate Coppes tied for 18th in the pole vault with a height of 9 feet, while senior Rachel Vigorita finished 19th in the high jump by clearing 4-10. Junior Jessica Stratton took 21st place in the 1,600 with a time of 5:50.71. Senior Alyssa Layte earned 20th place in the discus with a distance of 87-9 and took 25th place in the shot put with a toss of 28-6.25.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Rams’ 4x800 relay of sophomore Luke Hanratty, senior Xavier Rios, junior Shane Henderson, and senior Eric Sultini claimed fifth place at the State Open on June 4. The quartet finished with a time of 8:04.88 to earn four points for Old Saybrook at the meet.
On June 9, Sultini, Henderson, Hanratty, and Rios ran a time of 8:00.99 to take seventh place in the 4x800 at the New England Championship.
Additionally at the Open, Henderson took 12th place in the 1,600 with a time of 4:24.01. Additionally, senior Jalen Johnson finished 14th in the 400-meter dash at 50.88 seconds.
Golf
The Old Saybrook golf squad finished in third place at the Division State Golf Championship at the Timberlin Golf Course in Kensington on June 4. The Rams tallied a score of 333 to finish behind first-place Portland (325) and second-place Immaculate (330).
Rams’ senior Kyle Savino finished the day tied with Portland’s Stephen Vincelette for second place with a five-over par score of 77 at the state meet. Sophomore Ben O’Dell tied for 15th with a score of 83, while Dean Nobile tied for 22nd at 84. Jack Walsh came in tied for 41st with a round of 89, and James DePalermo tied for 72nd with a 101 for Old Saybrook.
Girls’ Tennis
The Rams’ girls tennis team was represented by singles players Sam Fucci and Tanya Gianitsos at the recent State Open Championship, while Arina Jiang and Amy Young competed in the doubles bracket.
In the opening round of the singles tournament, Fucci took an 8-0 defeat against No. 13 seed Sarah Bullers of Amity at the Open. Gianitsos lost an 8-2 match against 22nd-seeded Lindsay Riordan of Hand.
In the first round of the doubles tourney, Jiang and Young lost an 8-1 contest against Westbrook’s Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi.
