Hand Boys’ Track Finishes as SCC Runner-Up; Niekrash Named Conference Coach of the Year

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Hand boys’ outdoor track team earned runner-up honors SCC Championship by totaling 74 points at Amity on May 23. Shelton won the meet with 94 points.

Mike Burchell claimed the discus title with a throw of 145-4 to go with a first-place finish in the shot put at 50-9.75. Isaiah McNeilly won the javelin with a toss of 165-2, and Quincy Heinrich finished fourth (145-0) in the event.

The 4x400 relay of Jaime Calderon, Ameen Parks, Carson Hines, and Nick Porte finished third (3:27.59), as did the 4x800 of Calderon, Porte, Drew Carone, and Tyler Bennard (8:06.84). The 4x100 relay of Steve Kao, Kade Doverspike, Parks, and Richmond finished fifth (44.56).

Calderon raced to fourth in the 800 (2:00.60) and Porte was eighth (2:01.64). Greyson McGeary placed fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.08) and sixth for the 300 hurdles (42.61), while Bryce Meyers finished sixth for the pole vault (11-0). Heinrich (5-10) and Caleb Nugent (5-10) finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively, for the high jump, and Kijana Richmond took seventh in the 100 (11.20).

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Tigers finished in 10th place with 22 points scored at the SCC Championship.

Chloe Thompson finished third in the 800 (2:21.21), while Gabby Harmon placed fourth for the 200 (26.23) and 400 (58.82). The 4x100 relay of Elinor Laffargue, Bridget Phillips, Grace Rogers, and Hayley Dean finished sixth (52.71); and the 4x400 relay of Chloe Thompson, Keelin Virgulto, Emily Connelly, and Gabby Harmon claimed seventh (4:15.95). Megan Ruffo finished eighth for the 3,200 (12:34.36).

Softball

Hand finished the regular season with a record of 18-2 to go with a mark of 7-1 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division after taking 7-1 loss to East Haven in its regular-season finale on May 21. Hand, which won the division title, squared off against East Haven just two days later in a SCC Tournament quarterfinals, where the No. 2 seed Tigers took a 9-4 loss to the No. 7 Yellowjackets.

Hand (18-3) is the No. 2 seed in the Class L State Tournament and earned a first-round bye. The Tigers will host either No. 15 Platt (11-9) or No. 18 Fitch (9-11) in the second round on Wednesday, May 30 at 4 p.m.

Also last week, Tigers’ Head Coach Mike Niekrash was named the SCC Coach of the Year. Hand additionally saw four athletes earn All-SCC honors: Sophie Schreck, Abby Geshwind, Caroline O’Connor, and Christina Coric.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Hand took a loss to Cheshire in the SCC Tournament semifinals last week. Top-seeded Hand faced No. 4 Cheshire in the semis and lost a 9-5 contest on May 22.

The 6th-seeded Tigers (11-6) next play in the Class M State Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, May 30, when they will host No. 11 Ellington (11-6) in the first round at 5 p.m.

Boys’ Golf

The Tigers picked up three wins last week to improve to 13-4 this year.

On May 21, Hand scored a 161 to sweep a tri-match against Hamden (163) and Guilford (176). Matt Doyle had a score of 38, while Michael McKeon also shot a 38. Conner Quinn scored a 42, and Aidan Stuart finished with a 43.

The Tigers defeated Amity 166-174 the next day. In cold and steady rain, Hand was led by Quinn with a one-over-par round of 37. Doyle (40), Stuart (44), and Matt Pellatt (45) rounded out the scoring for Hand.

Girls’ Golf

Hand is now 6-8 after grabbing two wins in three matches last week.

The Tigers first lost a match to Mercy, 182-238, on May 21. Molly Meyer shot a 57, Angie Balzano had a score of 58, Bella Larizza shot a 59, Lucia Balzano turned in a round of 64, and Julia Rumberger shot a 77.

Hand defeated Lauralton Hall 216-223 on May 23. Larizza shot a 52, Angie Balzano scored a 53, Meyer finished with a 54, Lucia Balzano shot a 55, while Josie Anderson and Erickson Richard each turned in a 57.

The Tigers then shot a 191 to defeat Sacred Heart Academy (212) on May 24. Meyer shot a 46 and was followed by Angie Balzano (48), Larizza (48), Anderson (49), and Richard (51).
