Huskies’ Boys' Tennis Collects Two More Victories; Girls’ Lacrosse Sees Four-Win Improvement
Boys’ Tennis
The Morgan boys’ tennis team played a pair of matches last week and won both of them to improve to a 16-1 with one match remaining in the regular season. The Huskies posted wins versus Valley Regional and Stonington in their contests last week.
On May 14, the Huskies won a 5-2 road match at Valley Regional. Patrick Markovics scored a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 2 singles position for Morgan. Garrett Johnson netted a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the No. 4 singles match, while JP Nye recorded a 6-0, 6-0 shutout in the No. 5 singles spot. For doubles, the No. 1 duo of Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory, and the pair of Sean Arribas Cockley and Drew Marzano took the No. 2 match by default.
On May 20, Morgan picked up a 4-3 win at Stonington. The Huskies’ lone singles victory came from the No. 4 spot with Johnson earning a 6-2, 6-3 win. On the doubles court, the tandems of Murray and Nuzzo (6-0, 6-1), Arribas Cockley and Marzano (6-0, 6-2), and Calvin Jackson and Nye (6-1, 6-1) secured victories for the Huskies.
The Huskies are competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week, after which they will hit the court for the Class S State Championship.
Girls’ Tennis
The Huskies lost the only match on their schedule last week to drop to 3-15 on the year. On May 14, Morgan hosted Valley Regional and lost a 7-0 decision to the Warriors.
Golf
The Huskies’ golf squad picked up a win against East Hampton to go with a few defeats last week and now has a record of 7-12.
On May 14, Morgan played a match at the Clinton Country Club against Hand, Guilford, and Branford. The Huskies scored 197 on the day and lost to the Tigers (159), Indians (182), and the Hornets (183). Will Roberts shot a 41 on the day, while Jason Cohen turned in a score of 48. Ryan Powers tallied a score of 53, and Trevor Rohrbacher had a total of 55.
Two days later, Morgan lost a 161-191 match against Portland at the Portland Golf Course. Roberts was the Huskies’ low man with a 43, and Cohen scored a 46 on the day. Powers served up a score of 50, and Rohrbacher’s scorecard read 52.
On May 17, the Huskies went to Black Birch Golf Course and picked up a 172-203 victory against East Hampton. Roberts shot 40 in the match, and he was followed by Cohen (41), and Powers (42), and Matt Zoner (49).
Softball
Morgan took an 8-7 defeat against Old Saybrook last week to move to 5-12 on the year. The Huskies need to win their last three games of the regular season to qualify for the Class S State Tournament.
Baseball
The Huskies took a pair of recent defeats and are now 6-13 this year.
On May 14, Morgan hosted Haddam-Killingworth at the Indian River Complex and lost a 7-0 contest to the Cougars. On May 20, the Huskies took a 10-0 loss at Guilford.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Huskies competed against Valley Regional, Creed, and Hale-Ray on May 8, earning wins against the latter two teams, while losing to Valley.
Morgan saw several athletes earn victories in their events, including Kate Daley, who took first in the 3,200-meter run by clocking in at 11:19.3. Alyssa LeMay grabbed first place in the 200 with a time of 26.9, and she also took first place in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet-10 inches. With a height of 4-8, Charlotte Davenport earned first in the high jump. Mikayla Mancini snagged first in the triple jump with a distance of 34-1. Two relays also notched first place finishes: the 4x100 group of Taylor Wyatt, Mancini, LeMay, and Davenport (51.9) and the 4x400 team of Isabella Ranaudo, Mancini, Allie Gardner, and Maura Kelly (4:31.8).
Gardner claimed second place in the 800 with a time of 2:35, while Mancini took second in the high jump at 4-6. Jenna Scanlon claimed second in the shot put with a toss of 23-6, and Samantha Mena took second in the discus with a throw of 70-11.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
Morgan posted victories versus Hale-Ray and Creed to go with a loss against Valley Regional in a meet last week.
Notable results from the meet included a first-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles from Anes Gadun with his time of 44.9 seconds. Patrick Wilson claimed first in the 400 with a time of 54.5 seconds.
Juan Avila grabbed second place in the long jump (17-9.5) and the triple jump (34-6) for the Huskies. Additionally, the quartet of Chayse Lofgren, Brett Martin, Justin Mucha, and Thomas Southwood earned second in the 4x800 relay with a time of 9:22.3. The same group earned second place in the 4x400 by finishing at 3:48.6.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Huskies hosted Notre Dame-Fairfield at the Indian River Complex and lost a 17-11 contest last week. Morgan now has a record of 8-7 with one game left in the regular season.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Morgan dropped its last two contests of 2018 campaign last week. After going winless last season, the Huskies finished with a 4-12 record in their first year with Head Coach William Lindsay this spring.
On May 14, the Huskies headed to North Branford, where they lost a 21-7 decision against the Thunderbirds. Madeline Stopkoski scored two goals and provided three assists in the game, while Olivia McCray netted two goals. Delaney Mastriano, Georgia Nye, and Emily Davis each scored goal, plus Madison Seeger and Erin Lindsay provided an assist apiece. Goalkeeper Cassidy Shepard made 16 saves on the day. Stopkoski had three draw controls, and Lindsay had two. Mastriano snagged three interceptions for Morgan.
Three days later, Morgan lost a 16-10 contest against Old Lyme. Stopkoski posted five goals in the loss. Davis scored two goals, while adding an assist. McCray had a goal and an assist, Seeger and Lindsay scored one goal each, while Nye and Joelle Vuillleumier both recorded a pair of assists. Robyn Vuilleumier and Mastriano each had one assist. Shepard totaled 17 saves in net for the Huskies, who saw Lindsay win six draw controls and Robyn Vuilleumier scoop up six ground balls.
