The Old Saybrook girls’ outdoor track team claimed first place at the Runnin’ Rams Invitational by tallying 167.70 points to lead the 20-team field on May 12. The Rams’ total was more than 100 points ahead of runner-up East Hampton, which finished with 67 points for the meet.
As usual, the Rams’ relays put together strong performances. The 4x800-meter relay team of Tehra Givehand, Ally Castro, Julia Sultini, and Emily Stratton took first place with a time of 10:28.03, while 4x100 quartet of Dylin Adams, Vika Stoltz, Priscilla Gumkowski, and Grace Mclaughlin grabbed first place behind a time of 53.59. In the 4x400 relay, the team of Grace Albert, Autmun Szucs, Ingrid Boland, and Adams took second place by clocking in at 4:23.87.
For individual events, Grace Hanratty finished first for the 800 by posting a mark of 2:19.64. Annea Thaci took first place in the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet-2 inches. In the pole vault, Tyra Finkeldey claimed first place by clearing 10-6. Rachel Vigorita posted a height of 4-10 to take home first place in the high jump. Mclaughlin tied for third with a height of 4–6.
Castro claimed second in the 3,200 with her time of 12:28.27, and Boland came in third at 12:45.20. Allison Cody snagged second in the 400 with time of 1:02.82. In the 200, Cody finished fourth at 28.13. In the long jump, Vika Stoltz’s leap of 15-6.5 was good for second place, while Thaci took fifth with a jump of 14-10.75. For the 1,600, Jessica Stratton claimed third place by finishing in 5:14.91. Isaballa Donahue secured third place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.27, and Cate Coppes finished fourth at 17.64.
In the shot put, Alyssa Layte (30-6) and Elizabeth Mariol (30-2.5) came in third and fourth place, respectively. Layte also took second place in the discus with a throw of 84-2, plus Kyra Ludwiszweski came in third at 83-7. In the 300 hurdles, Finkeldey finished fourth at 51.60, and Szucs came in sixth place at 52.70.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
Old Saybrook secured second place at the Runnin’ Rams Invitational with a score of 81.5 points last week.
The Rams saw strong from several competitors, including Jalen Johnson, who took first place in the 100-meter dash with his time of 11.38 seconds and was second in the 200 at 23.18. Dan Almeida came in fifth place in the 100 (11.87). In the 800, Shane Henderson finished first with a time of 1:58.37, and Eric Sultini took second at 1:58.41. Xavier Rios finished the 800 in sixth place with a time of 2:06.57.
The Rams’ 4x400 relay of Luke Hanratty, Cooper Luciani, Henderson, and Sultini took first place with a time of 3:37.33. In the 4x100, the team of Max Thomas, Carlos Chacon, Devin Moshier, and Almeida came in third place at 45.57. Luciani snagged third place in the 300 hurdles with his time of 43.85, and Hanratty claimed fourth place in the 400 with a 54.56. In the high jump, Anthony Karg cleared 5-2 and earned fifth place.
Baseball
The Rams’ baseball team put three victories in the books last week and is now sporting a record of 12-4 on the season. Old Saybrook defeated East Hampton twice and also posted a win versus Old Lyme in last week’s action.
On May 7, Old Saybrook scored a 5-4, come-from-behind win at East Hampton. The Rams trailed 3-0 until the fifth inning, when they scored four runs to take the lead. The Bellringers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, but Old Saybrook took back the lead in the seventh with an RBI single from Jack Coella. Coella had three hits and two RBI, while Sebby Gallitto had a couple of hits and scored two runs. Jaden Rolon provided a hit and two RBI for the Rams. Cooper Pavlovich pitched five innings, and then Dan Cote came on in relief to throw two innings and get the win.
The next day, the Rams lost an 8-2 decision at New London. Gallitto and Lockhart both had a pair of hits, while Patrick Kelley and Jordan Butler each had a hit with an RBI.
On May 9, Old Saybrook claimed an 8-6 win at Old Lyme. The Rams went up big early and had to hold off a six-run, seventh-inning Wildcat rally and secure the win. Ryan Dubord was the winning pitcher after going six innings and striking out five. He also picked up a base hit at the plate, drove in two, and scored a run. Pavlovich supplied a hit and two RBI, as did Dan Cote, who also scored a run. Patrick Kelley had a hit and scored two runs, plus Hayden Lockhart recorded two hits and a walk.
Two days later, the Rams notched a 12-2 home win over East Hampton behind a huge, 10-run second inning. Coella had a little bit of everything with a hit, a walk, a run, and three RBI, while Rolon collected three hits, scored two runs, and drove in another. Cote provided a hit, an RBI, a walk, and two runs, and Lockhart tallied a hit, an RBI, and two runs. Kelley added two hits and two runs.
Softball
The Rams posted a victory versus Westbrook last week and now own a 9-9 record on the year.
On May 7, Old Saybrook broke out the bats and grabbed a 16-4 win over Westbrook. The Rams staked themselves to a seven-run lead in the first inning and saw a lot of people produce at the plate throughout the game. Maeve Foley went 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, and three RBI; Lexie Root went 2-for-3 with a double; Sarah Lombardi went 3-for-3 with two doubles, and Wendy Bowden added a pair of hits. Carly Michaud picked up the win on the mound after pitching five innings.
On May 9, Old Saybrook took an 8-4 loss at Hale-Ray. Two days later, the Rams dropped a 2-1 contest against Montville at home. Michaud had a strong showing by only allowing three hits in the hard-luck loss. Chloe Root led off the game with a double, followed by another double from Foley to score the first run. Montville answered back in the third, then put up another run in the fifth to take the lead. Foley went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the game.
Boys’ Tennis
Old Saybrook won three road matches last week to move its record to 10-4 on the season and qualify for the Class S State Championship.
On May 9, the Rams claimed a 6-1 victory at East Hampton. The next day, Old Saybrook qualified for states by defeating Valley Regional in a 6-1 decision. On the day after that, the Rams grabbed 7-0 shutout victory against Haddam-Killingworth.
Girls’ Tennis
The Rams posted two victories last week to improve to 11-4 and seal a spot in the Class S State Tournament.
On May 9, Old Saybrook won a 6-1 decision against East Hampton at home. The next day, the Rams took a 5-2 home loss versus Valley Regional. On May 11, Old Saybrook won a 5-2 match at Haddam-Killingworth.
Golf
Old Saybrook claimed a pair of victories in last week’s action to boost their record to 8-2 this spring.
On May 9, the Rams grabbed a 171-174 home win against Morgan at Fenwick Golf Course. Kyle Savino shot a 39, while Jay DePalermo turned in a score of 41 for the Rams. Jack Walsh finished the day with a score of 43, and Dean Nobile and Ben O’Dell both finished with a 48.
The next day, the Rams lost a 172-177 match against Coginchaug at Lyman Orchards.
Then on May 11, Old was back at Fenwick, where they scored a 168-213 victory against Hale-Ray. Nobile earned medalist honors with a score of 40, and DePalermo followed closely with a 41. Savino turned in a score of 43, Walsh finished with a 44, and O’Dell totaled a 48 on the day.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Old Saybrook lost both of its games last week and now has a record of 8-5 record on the year.
On May 8, the Rams lost a 13-11 contest at Old Lyme. Two days later, Old Saybrook took a 7-2 loss on the road against Branford.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Rams lost a 7-0 contest at Old Lyme on May 8 to move to 3-10 on the season. Keaton Roarick made 20 saves against 34 shots in net for Old Saybrook.
