The Branford-East Haven-North Branford girls’ ice hockey team took a 7-0 loss against the Suffield co-op squad in the semifinals of the State Tournament on March 9. The Wings completed their season with a record of 18-5.
The Wings were the No. 8 seed in the State Tournament, and Head Coach Jack Norton’s club had advanced to the semifinal round by defeating Northwest Catholic-Mercy (6-3) in the first round and then upsetting top-seeded Greenwich (4-1) in the quarterfinal round of the bracket. Then last week, the Wings faced off with No. 4 seed Suffield-Enfield-Housatonic-Ellington-Metropolitan Learning Center in the semifinals and lost by the final score of 7-0 at The Rinks at Shelton. Suffield went on to play Darien in the state final.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven-Old Lyme-Old Saybrook-East Hampton boys’ ice hockey squad earned the No. 12 seed in the Division II State Tournament and faced off against No. 5 seed North Branford in the opening round at Northford Ice Pavilion on March 6. The Yellowjackets saw their season come to an end as they dropped a 3-1 decision versus the Thunderbirds to finish their year with an overall record of 9-11-1.
Both teams were firing pucks on the net all game when East Haven and North Branford met up in the first round of states. East Haven forced North Branford’s goalie to make 40 saves, while senior captain Matt Twarowski made 32 saves in net for the Yellowjackets. East Haven’s lone goal was scored by Chris Teto on an assist from Alec Speirs.
Cheerleading
The Yellowjackets competed in the Class M State Championship at Floyd Little Athletic Center on March 4 and finished in seventh place out of 20 schools at the meet. The Easties totaled a score of 144.9 points, which was just four points shy of a top-five finish.
