Madison natives Zachary Donohue, Kiley McKinnon, and Mac Bohonnon represented the United States when they competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea last week. Donohue and partner Madison Hubbell of Michigan finished in fourth place for the ice dancing competition in figure skating. McKinnon advanced to the final of the women’s aerial freestyle skiing event and ultimately finished in 10th place. Bohonnon competed in the men’s aerial freestyle skiing and was unable to make it past the qualifying round.

This marked the first time that Donohue, 27, and Hubbell competed at the Olympic Games. The ice dancing competition is broken up into two portions that take place on separate days. Donohue and Hubbell were in third place after posting a score of 77.75 in the short-dance portion of the competition that took place on Feb. 18. The duo then took the ice for the free-dance portion on Feb. 19, and their performance gave them a total score of 187.69, putting them a few points behind Maia and Alex Shibutani, a sibling tandem from the U.S. who scored a 192.59, for the bronze medal. The Canadian team of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir took the gold with a score of 206.07, while Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron from France won the silver medal by totaling a 205.28. Donohue and Hubbell had qualified for this year’s Olympics by placing first at the 2018 U.S. National Figure Skating Championships in San Jose, California.

In her first Olympic Games, McKinnon, 22, recorded a score of 87.88 on her last attempt in the qualifying round of the women’s aerials competition on Feb. 15 and was one of 12 athletes who advanced to the final that took place the following day. On her third jump of the final, McKinnon posted a total of 80.95 and missed the mark to advance to the final round of six, ultimately finishing in 10th place overall. Hanna Huskova of Belarus took the gold medal with a score of 96.14, while China’s Xin Chang and Fanyu Chong won the silver and bronze medals, respectively. McKinnon’s U.S. teammate, Madison Olsen, finished in sixth place overall with a score of 85.36.

Bohonnon, 22, competed in the qualifying for the men’s aerials on Feb. 17. For the first round, in which the top 12 skiers advanced to the final, he notched a score of 85.97 to place 23rd. Bohonnon then improved his score to a 112.39 for his second attempt to finish 11th in that heat, although his cumulative effort between the two jumps wasn’t quite enough to clinch a spot in the final. Bohonnon had previously finished in fifth place for men’s aerials competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
