One week after setting the school record for the most points scored as a member of the Yellowjackets’ girls’ basketball team, senior Kylie Schlottman became the all-time leading scorer in the history of East Haven High School basketball last week.
Schlottman scored 20 points when the Easties earned a 66-47 home victory over Amity 66-47 and now has 1,461 career points, breaking Josh Charbonneau’s record of 1,454 for the most points scored by anyone to play for East Haven’s girls’ or boys’ basketball teams that he set in 2002. McKenzie Helms scored 16 points, Pendziwater had 10 points, Taylor Salato added nine points, and Isabella Ragaini scored seven points for the Yellowjackets, who improved to 14-1 by defeating Amity on this historic night.
Previously, East Haven opened the week with a 52-35 win versus Sheehan on Jan. 24. Helms led the way by scoring 24 points to go with six assists and four steals. Marley Herard scored 11 points, and Alexis Pendziwater netted nine points for East Haven, which hit nine 3-pointers in the victory.
Boys’ Basketball
The Yellowjackets took three defeats last week and are now 5-8 on the season.
On Jan. 22, East Haven hosted Guilford and lost by a 61-38 final. Ed Popolizio scored a game-high 18 points in the loss, while Ryan Spano added eight points for the Easties.
East Haven played a much closer game against North Haven on Jan. 24, but wound up dropping a 53-52 decision. East Haven took a 22-21 lead into the half, but was then outscored 18-9 in the third quarter. The Yellowjackets stormed back by winning the fourth quarter 21-14, although North Haven held on the get the victory. Popolizio poured in a game-high 27 points, and Spano scored 10.
The Easties closed out the week by taking a 55-50 defeat to Lyman Hall on Jan. 26. Popolizio once again scored a game-high with 29 points, plus Spano and Nate Furino added eight points each. East Haven was in this one, but the Trojans outscored the Yellowjackets 23-9 in the third quarter, and that proved the difference.
Girls’ Indoor Track
Freshman Kisha Francois won a pair of events and broke school records in both of them, while teammate Molly Mazzucco also posted a first-place finish and set a school record for East Haven at the SCC West Sectional Championship. The Yellowjackets scored 30 points and came in seventh place at the meet, which was held at Floyd Little Athletic Center on Jan. 23.
Francois set two school records while winning both the 55-meter dash and the long jump at sectionals. In the 55, Francois had the second-best qualifying time at 7.57 seconds and then won the event at 7.46 to set the record. The previous best of 7.55 was held by Kelli Carfora. Francois’s time is also just 0.02 seconds off from qualifying her for the national meet. Francois was a double champion at the West Sectional Championship as she also won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet-4 inches to break Nicole Esposito’s school record of 16 feet-10.5 inches from 2009.
Mazzucco eclipsed 4 feet-11 inches in the high jump to win the event and top her own record of 4-10 that she had held with Jordan DiNatale and Alex DePalma.
The Yellowjackets’ other competitors at the sectional meet included Samantha Franceshi in the 55 (12th, 8.06) and 300 (19th, 48.97), Stephanie Redding in the 55 (28th, 8.62), and Grace Hutchinson in the 55 hurdles (19th, 11.93).
Boys’ Indoor Track
Jay Donaldson set the school record in the 55-meter dash, while placing second in the event for the Yellowjackets at last week’s SCC West Sectional Championship. East Haven finished in eighth place with 22 team points scored at the meet.
Most of the Easties’ points came in the 55 as Donaldson and Jordan Ingram both scored points with their top-four finishes. Donaldson had the best time in the prelims with a 6.68, and Ingram took fourth at 6.82. In the final, Donaldson set the East Haven school record with a mark of 6.62 to place second behind Hamden’s Christopher Pigatt, who won the event at 6.55. Donaldson’s time bettered Jesse Gallo’s school-record mark of 6.70 from 2008. Ingram placed fourth in the finals with a time 6.71.
Also the sectional meet, East Haven’s 4x200 relay team of Donaldson, Ingram, Mike Castellano, and Tom Myerholz finished third at 1:38.79. Radames Figueroa scored points in the 55 hurdles as he finished fourth in the final at 9.16 after placing sixth in the prelims with a 9.35.
Other individual competitors for East Haven at the meet were Mike Castellano in the 55 (23rd, 7.44), Figueroa in the 300 (20th, 41.00), Nathan Santos in the 300 (23rd, 41.78) and long jump (12th, 17-10.5), Abeed Ahmed in the 300 (32nd, 43.40), Oliver Gonzalez in the 600 (17th, 1:44.61), Jon Mulero in the 600 (21st, 1:56.42), Bryce Donovan in the 600 (22nd, 1:57.47), Kevin Francois in the 600 (23rd, 2:01.13) and long jump (18th, 15-10), Joe Castellano in the 1,600 (29th, 6:21.83), Myerholz in the 55 hurdles (12th, 9.92), Ian Loehmann in the long jump (13th, 17-0), Josh Brown in the shot put (22nd, 28-10).
The Yellowjackets’ 4x400 relay team of Myerholz, Ahmed, Santos, and Loehmann finished seventh at 4:12.09.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Branford-East Haven-North Branford (Bfd-EH-NB) girls’ ice hockey team ran its win streak to six straight games by notching three victories on its home ice at DiLungo Rink last week. East Haven freshman Julianna Constantinople recorded hat tricks in all three games for the Wings, who have now improved their overall record to 11-3 for the year.
Bfd-EH-NB opened up the week by posting a 6-2 win over Guilford on Jan. 25. Constantinople scored three goals to pick up her second straight hat trick in the win. North Branford’s Melanie Norton scored her first varsity goal, while fellow North Branford student Emilie Wilkinson and Branford resident Sophia Caturano also had goals for the Wings. East Haven senior Julia SanGiovanni earned the win in net.
Two nights later, the Wings hosted Wilton-Norwalk-McMahon and skated to a 6-3 victory. Constantinople stayed on a tear by once again scoring three goals to post her third hat trick in a row for Bfd-EH-NB. North Branford senior Emmy Norton also lit the lamp three times to record a hat trick for the Wings.
The Wings closed out their week by facing off against Avon-Southington-East Granby-RHAM on Jan. 27 and prevailed 6-2. Constantinople scored three more goals for her fourth consecutive hat trick in the victory. Wilkinson scored a pair of goals, while Norton had a goal with three assists. East Haven’s Izabella Segui played a great game in goal to get the win.
Wrestling
East Haven took a 56-19 loss to Xavier 56-19 on Jan. 23 and saw four wrestlers earn victories in their respective weight classes.
Victor Garcia won in the 113-pound weight class by pin at the 2:21 mark, Tanner Divito won at 132 by a 9-3 decision, Amadeo Bugatti won a 17-4 major decision at 138, and Justin Fonacier won via a quick pin in just 21 seconds in the 220-pound division.
