Girls’ Basketball
The Westbrook girls’ basketball team is now 2-4 on the year after splitting a pair of matchups in last week’s action. The Knights netted a 44-39 win versus Portland and then took a 55-51 loss to East Hampton.
On Jan. 9, the Knights hosted Portland and put 31 points on the board in the first half, while holding the Highlanders to 16. The game tightened up in the final quarter, but Erin Metcalfe sank two key free throws to put the win on ice. Savannah Marshall recorded a double with 27 points and 10 rebounds for Westbrook. Metcalfe and Kelly Donlan both scored six points in the victory.
Head Coach Kelly Landino feels glad that her team is starting to see some success on the court this season.
“I thought we played great tonight, individually and as a team,” Landino said of the Portland win. “I am so happy that our girls can feel success after working so hard through all of our injuries. Tonight was a true team effort.”
Three days later, Westbrook lost a hard-fought game at home to East Hampton, 55-51. The Knights led by five at the half, but the Bellringers outscored Westbrook by nine in the second half to come away with the four-point win. Marshall led the Knights with 25 points, Donlan scored 10 points, and Olivia Archer added eight points. Gabby Ehlert scored four, while Callie Newberg and Ruby Asby each added two points apiece.
