Old Saybrook-Westbrook Football Shuts Out Granby, 30-0; Boys’ Soccer Stays Undefeated

The Old Saybrook-Westbrook football team secured a home victory with 30-0 shutout over Granby Memorial on Sept. 23. With the win, the Rams improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Rams opened the scoring in the first quarter when senior running back Vincent Dyer punched it into the end zone from the 4-yard-line. Cooper Pavlovich kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Dyer, Jameson Long, and Luke Duffy all contributed to a sack in the end zone for a safety to make it 9-0 in favor of the Rams. Dyer later ran in for an 8-yard touchdown, and quarterback Victor Pascoe scored a TD on a run from five yards out in the second quarter. Pavlovich converted on both point-after attempts to make it 23-0 by halftime. OS-W’s final score came on another Pascoe run of five yards, and Pavlovich again kicked the extra point for the 30-0 victory.
The Rams ran the ball relentlessly against the Bears as Pascoe only threw four passes on the day and completed three of them for 16 yards. He also the ball 15 times for 71 yards and two scores. Dyer had 16 carries for 119 yards and two touchdowns, while Andrew Naccarato also picked up some yards on the ground with 11 carries for 70 yards.
The Rams’ defense limited Granby Memorial to just 117 total yards in the game, and the Bears were only able to muster 14 yards passing.
Boys Soccer
Old Saybrook won two more games last week to continue its strong start to the season with a record of 5-0.
On Sept. 18, the Rams were at Valley Regional and claimed a decisive 4-1 victory over the Warriors. Valley led 1-0 at halftime, but the Rams tied it up quickly in the second half, and followed that by netting three more goals.
On Sept. 23, Old Saybrook was back home to face Cromwell and had a big second half en route to an 8-3 victory. The Panthers went up 2-0 early, but Old Saybrook responded with six straight goals, starting at the 18:27 mark on a score by Paddy Ryan from Austin Hilger to make it 2-1. At 36:53, Jack Coella scored an unassisted goal to tie it up at the half.
Old Saybrook dominated the second half by scoring six goals to Cromwell’s one to run away with the win. Paddy Ryan got his second goal at 48:40, again assisted by Hilger. Sebastiano Gallitto scored at 52:24 on an assist from Hilger, and then Christian Fox had the assist on a Hilger goal at 56:05. Right after that, Paddy Ryan secured a hat trick with another goal, this time assisted by Shon Ryan, to make it 6-2. Cromwell got one back, but the Rams scored another on a penalty kick by Justin Phillips at 59:22. Anthony Karg then picked up an unassisted goal for the final tally of 8-3.
Hilger finished with four assists, and Fox netted his first varsity goal in the contest. Old Saybrook outshot Cromwell 27-12 as Jonah Nucci had three saves in goal for the Rams.
Girls’ Soccer
Old Saybrook played three matches last week, earning a tie in one contest and losing the other two. The Rams’ record stands at 1-4-1 on the season.
On Sept. 19, Old Saybrook played to a 0-0 tie in a home game against Valley Regional. On Sept. 21, the Rams went to Old Lyme to face the Wildcats and lost 3-0. Two days later, Old Saybrook was back at home to host Cromwell and lost a 3-2 decision against the Panthers.
Field Hockey
The Rams played two games last week took a pair of defeats to move to 1-4 this season.
On Sept. 19, the Rams headed to Deep River to square off against Valley Regional and took a 1-0 loss in overtime. To finish the week, Old Saybrook had a game in North Branford and dropped a 3-2 decision on Sept. 22.
