The North Haven football team notched its first victory of the season by posting a 54-35 win at SCC newcomer Harding at Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport on Sept. 16.

North Haven led 14-13 after the first quarter before outscoring the Presidents 27-0 in the second to hold a 41-13 halftime advantage. The Indians’ offense continued moving the sticks in the second half, and Head Coach Anthony Sagnella’s squad came away with the win, despite allowing Harding to score three more touchdowns in the half.

“We were happy to get the win, but I was disappointed that we had to play defense with our offense,” said Sagnella. “We have a lot of growing up to do. We scored 54 points and couldn’t get our second offense on the field. We couldn’t stop them...We had problems tackling and playing physical, problems in covering the pass. We had problems.”

North Haven ran 55 times for 320 yards in the victory, led by senior Zack Orth with 15 carries for 87 yards and three touchdowns. Alex Ciaburro gained 81 yards on 14 carries and also scored a touchdown, while Devan Brockamer ran seven times for 63 yards and a pair of TDs for the Indians.

Brockamer scored on a 20-yard touchdown run just 51 seconds into the game and North Haven had a 7-0 lead following Chase DiCarlo’s extra point kick. With the game tied at 7 later in the quarter, Brockamer broke free for a 20-yard TD rush and a 14-7 Indians’ lead. Harding cut it to 14-13 after one, but then North Haven went off for four straight touchdowns to end the first half. Mark Montano scored on a 1-yard run, Shamus Meehan tossed a 52-yard touchdown to Korbin Pecora, and then Orth scored on TD runs of three yards and one yard to put the Indians up 41-13 at the break.

Harding scored the first touchdown of the second half on a long run to make it 41-20. Orth followed with a 9-yard scoring rush, and then Ciarburro took one in from four yards out to give the Indians a 54-20 command late in the third quarter. Harding scored the game’s last two TDs for the 54-35 final.

Montano rushed nine times for 45 yards, and Brendan Ziaks ran six times for 35 yards for North Haven, which saw Meehan complete three of his six pass attempts for 80 yards with one touchdown and one interception. DiCarlo went 7-for-8 on his extra point kicks.

On defense, Ciarburro snagged an interception for the Indians, Stephen Chamberlain had a sack, and Ziaks and Vinny Campagnuolo recovered fumbles. Ciaburro and Orth both had eight tackles to lead North Haven.

North Haven’s next game is at fellow SCC Tier 1 opponent Cheshire at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22.
