Post 76 Juniors Earn Doubleheader Sweeps of West Haven and Orange
The North Haven Junior Legion baseball team was on the field for several recent Zone 2 contests, sweeping doubleheaders from West Haven and Orange before dropping both ends of a doubleheader with Stratford. Post 76 also took a pair of non-zone defeats and is now 7-7 in zone play this summer to go with an overall record of 7-12-1.
On June 29, North Haven won both games of a home doubleheader versus West Haven with final scores of 21-2 and 10-0. In the first game, Justin Shea went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, four RBI, and a stolen base to lead North Haven’s offensive outpouring. Jack Peruso had two doubles as part of his 2-for-2 day that also included a walk, three runs scored, and two RBI. John Gontarek was 2-for-5 with a double, a run, and three RBI. Nick Martineau singled, drew a walk, and scored three runs; Ryan Sullivan had a single with a walk, a run, and two RBI; Dylan Brockamer singled, scored two runs, and drove home a run; Dan Cannvaciolo had a hit with a run scored and two RBI; and Nick Rossi singled, walked, scored a run, and drove in a run. Carson Leyerzapf allowed two unearned runs in 2.1 innings, with Owen Silk pitching 2.2 scoreless innings to finish it off.
In the nightcap, Cannvaciolo threw a one-hit shutout to lead North Haven to the 10-0 victory. Cannavaciolo pitched all six innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, while striking out eight. Shea had another big game by hitting a triple with three RBI to go with a run scored, while Sullivan went 2-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI. Christian Somma had a single with a walk and a run; Mason Balmer singled, walk, scored a run, and knocked home a run; Silk singled, scored a run, and had an RBI; and Alex Page had a double with a run scored and an RBI to help Post 76 complete its doubleheader sweep.
Two days later, Post 76 faced Team Reyes at the Connecticut Sportsplex in North Branford and dropped a 4-2 decision. Two days after that, North Haven played the Westchester Lightning at the same site and lost 6-2 in another non-zone contest.
Then on July 6, Post 76 swept a home doubleheader with Orange by taking the first game 9-8 and winning the nightcap 2-1. North Haven took the opener by plating a run in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off victory and then won the second game by scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.
On July 8, Post 76 played a doubleheader at Stratford and took a pair of defeats, losing by the final scores of 6-2 and 6-0.
