Yellowjackets’ Baseball Eliminated from States; Track Teams Compete at Class MM Meet

The East Haven baseball team saw its season come to an end in the first round of the Class L State Tournament on May 30. As the No. 16 seed, the Easties hosted No. 17 Berlin and took a 5-2 defeat to finish the year with an overall record of 13-10.
Nick Kraszewski pitched six innings for the Yellowjackets. East Haven had eight hits, but left several runners on base throughout the game, while Berlin capitalized on its chances by scoring four runs with two outs. Tyler Leone had a pair of hits for the Easties.
Boys’ Tennis
The Yellowjackets’ top doubles pairing of senior Jake Zito and junior Rob Scalese earned the No. 13 seed for the Class M State Championship and wound up advancing to the third round last week.
Zito and Scalese received a bye through the first round and went up against Wolcott’s Alexander Fishbein and Tyler Shoban in the second round. Zito and Scalese made quick work of that tandem to the tune of a 6-1, 6-0 victory. In the third round, Zito and Scalese took a 6-4, 6-2 loss against the 4th-seeded team of Davon Chen and Eric Gu from East Lyme.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Yellowjackets took part in the Class MM State Championship and placed 24th among 30 schools with five points scored on May 31 at Willow Brook Park. All of East Haven’s points were scored by Haley Montesanto in the 300-meter hurdles as she finished in fourth place with a time of 48.83 seconds.
Other Easties who competed at the meet were Katie Maffeo in the 400 (15th, 1:02.97), Sydney Marquardt in the long jump (23rd, 14-10), Isabella Ragaini in the javelin (23rd, 91-8), Summer Onorato in the javelin (25th, 85-6), and Paige Maffeo in the 100 (27th, 13.70). Also, the Easties’ 4x400 relay team of Katie Maffeo, Paige Maffeo, Ragaini, and Montesanto finished 10th with a time of 4:21.73.
Boys’ Outdoor Track
East Haven competed at the Class MM State Championship on May 31 at Willow Brook Park and finished in 25th place out of 32 schools with seven points scored. Jordan Ingram scored all seven points for the Yellowjackets in the sprinting events.
In the 100-meter dash, Ingram took sixth place in the preliminary heat at 11.49 seconds, after which he bettered his time to 11.45 in the final to claim fifth place and score four points. In the 200, Ingram finished in sixth with a time of 23.22 to score three points.
Other competitors for the Yellowjackets included Reinaldo Martinez in the 110 high hurdles (12th, 17.49) and 300 intermediate hurdles (13th, 45.29), Niam Coward in the discus (13th, 100-3), and McClay Marshall in the 400 (18th, 56.68). East Haven’s 4x100 relay team of Marshall, Ingram, Dominic Manna, and Coward posted a mark of 45.04 to finish in 11th place.
Golf
The Yellowjackets concluded their campaign with a match versus Guilford at Madison Country Club on May 31. East Haven shot a 184, while the Indians scored a 167 to come away with the victory.
