Team Black Magic Claims the Crown at Old Saybrook Parks and Rec Volleyball Tournament
The Old Saybrook Parks and Recreation (OSPR) Department held its second annual Co-ed Volleyball Tournament on April 28. The tournament took place during Friday Night Teen Center hours and was open to all students who are between grades 6 and 8. Five co-ed teams featuring six players each entered into the tournament. The teams were Black Magic, Krusty Krab Pizzas, Volleyballers, Axelottels with Capes, and Smokecoid.
The tournament was a one-night event. It started off with a round robin portion that allowed the teams the opportunity to play against each other once and also get in a good practice round with their teammates. Each game was either five minutes long or lasted until one team scored 15 points. Based off each team’s win-loss record in the round robin, the seedings were determined for the single-elimination, bracket-style tournament.
The single-elimination games went for either 10 minutes or until a team scored 15 points. Black Magic, which consisted of Gannon Efinger, Kayla Holt, Gabe Karr, Trey Martin, Will Webb, and Nate Lacey-Giugno, was crowned the 2017 volleyball champions. Black Magic was seeded No. 1 in the tournament and took on the 2nd-seeded Volleyballers in the championship game. The Volleyballers were Ryan Stratton, Jack Forrestt, Bradley Kulman, Maggie Ashe, Jake Pavlovich, and Kyle Colella,
