Yellowjackets’ Softball Defeats Amity; Girls’ Tennis Moves to 4-0
Softball
The Easties’ softball squad took two recent defeats, but then rebounded with a big 7-4 victory over Amity in last week’s action. The win versus the Spartans moved East Haven to 2-3 overall through the first quarter of the regular season.
On April 11, East Haven lost a 15-8 home decision against non-conference opponent Stamford, which scored a bunch of early runs on its way to the victory. Taylor Myers allowed two runs in relief on the mound for the Yellowjackets. Offensively, Julia SanGiovanni hit a grand slam, finishing the game with four hits, five RBI, and two runs scored.
The next day, Cheshire claimed a 5-3 win in East Haven. Mauro had two hits and Speers had two RBI for the Easties, who left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with a chance to either win or tie the game.
On April 13, East Haven completed its week by defeating Amity by a 7-4 final in Woodbridge. SanGiovanni, Jess Stettinger, and Speers all hit home runs for Head Coach Ed Crisafi’s club. Selena Mauro pitched well to earn the victory on the hill.
Baseball
East Haven split its two games last week to move to 2-3 for the season.
On April 10, Hamden and East Haven needed extra innings to decide the winner as the two teams were knotted at 2 through the first seven. The host Green Dragons came through with the game-winning single in the ninth to prevail by the final of 3-2. Starting pitcher Nick Guarino took the no-decision as East Haven finished with six hits in the loss. Frank Camera and Jake Ferrara knocked home the Yellowjackets’ two runs.
On April 12, Nick Kraszewski took the mound for East Haven and cruised to an 8-1 home victory versus Law, which had just three hits. Spano and Nate Furino had two hits each for Head Coach Butch Johnson’s team.
Girls’ Tennis
The Yellowjackets remained red hot to start their season by beating Foran and West Haven last week to improve to 4-0 for the year.
On April 10, East Haven edged Foran 4-3 in a road matchup. The Yellowjackets saw three singles players claimed victory as No. 1 singles player Jenna Pane won 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3; Devyn Gargano won at No. 2, 7-5, 6-4; and Juliana Mikulski won at No. 4 by the score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. The top doubles team of Autumn Hernandez and Sandy Nguyen won 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the victory for East Haven.
On April 13, East Haven upended West Haven by a 6-1 tally in another road match. Winners for East Haven included singles players Pane (6-0, 6-0); Gargano (6-1, 6-2); Gonzalez (5-7, 6-1, 8-6); and Mikulski (6-2, 6-0); along with the doubles duos of Trinh and Raffone (6-2, 6-4); plus Alexis Pendziwater and Luden (6-1, 6-1).
Boys’ Tennis
East Haven dropped its second match of the season when it took a 6-1 loss at North Haven on April 10. The lone win for East Haven came at No. 3 doubles as Seth Proto and Doug Comesanas came away with a 12-10 victory.
