Westbrook Boys’ Tennis Begins with Two Wins; Engels Tosses to Two Triumphs in East Hampton
Boys’ Tennis
The Knights’ boys’ tennis team had two matchups to begin the 2017 campaign and were victorious in both of them to jump out to a quick 2-0 start.
Westbrook was at home for Coginchaug on April 3 and won 7-0. In singles play, senior Gus Marx claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot; senior David Amendola earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2; senior Dylan Martinson won his match 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3; sophomore Nate Comment won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot; and senior Jason Raunikar won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5. In doubles, seniors Austin Herzy and Phil Hartzell won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; while junior Kevin Dickey and sophomore Jack Lyman won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.
On April 7, the Knights played Old Saybrook at home and won 7-0. In singles, Marx won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1; Amendola grabbed a win 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2; Martinson won 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot; Comment earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4; and Raunikar won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5. For doubles, Herzy and Hartzell won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1; and Dickey and Lyman claimed a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 2.
Girls’ Tennis
Westbrook played two contests last week, winning one of them to get its 2017 season started with 1-1 record.
The Knights played their first matchup against Coginchaug and lost 5-2 on April 3. Senior Casey Burns grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles spot; and sophomore Sara Farnoli claimed a 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory in the No. 2 spot.
On April 8, Westbrook played its first home match against Portland and earned a 7-0 victory. In singles play, Burns netted a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot; Farnoli won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2; junior Victoria Koplas grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot; and senior Aerial Ulanowicz won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. In doubles play, junior Marilyn Ulanowicz and junior Alexi Vumback won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. The duos of sophomore Savannah Marshall and junior Meredith Farrell, as well as juniors Tehya Hargett-Cerase and Alyssa Esposito, both won by default.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
Westbrook took part in the Bellringer Invitational in East Hampton last week and earned fourth place with a score of 68 points on April 8.
Junior Danyelle Engles recorded two first-place finishes for the Knights, winning the shot put with a distance of 33 feet-7.25 inches and the discus behind a distance of 108 feet-3 inches
Boys’ Outdoor Track
Last week, the Knights competed in the Bellringer Invitational, where they took fifth place by tallying 70.9 points.
Westbrook received first-place finishes from junior Vincent Dyer in the discus with a distance of 126 feet-7 inches, along with junior Elijah Panzera in the javelin at 130-2.
Softball
The Knights played three games to start the 2017 campaign and dropped a trio of decisions last week
Westbrook opened the season at home against East Hampton and lost 9-2. Senior Alexa Mulvihill recorded three strikeouts on the mound and went 1-for-3 in the batter’s box with a run scored for the Knights.
Next, the Knights hit the road to face Old Lyme and lost a close game, 7-6, on April 5. Senior Biance Ferrucci went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI for the Knights. Freshman Jaclyn Grace went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Mulvihill and freshman Callie Newberg shared the pitching duties for Westbrook.
On April 5, the Knights were on the road again to play North Branford and took a 23-0 defeat.
Baseball
Westbrook began its season by playing one game last week. The Knights took a 4-1 loss at Old Lyme on April 5.
