Smith Swims to a Pair of Stellar Showings for Westbrook at States
Westbrook student Garrett Smith swam at last week’s Class S State Championship and had a great day by coming away with a third-place finish, plus a fourth-place performance, while representing the Knights.
Smith, a sophomore, notched a time of 2:01.16 in the 200 individual medley to take third place and finish about a second off the winning pace set by Holy Cross’s Chris Fryer, who won the event with a mark of 2:00.20. Smith bettered his time of 2:04.10 from the Class S Trials, which took place on March 11 at Plainville High School.
Then in the 100 butterfly, Smith placed fourth by swimming a time of 55.27, which was just faster than his mark of 55.83 at the trials. Granby Memorial’s Christopher Weber won the event at the championship behind a mark of 53.32.
Smith was competing for Westbrook as a team-of-one and scored 51 points that put the Knights in 22nd place out of 32 squads at the Class S meet.
