North Branford Boys’ Hoops, Hockey See Seasons End in States
Boys’ Basketball
The North Branford boys’ basketball team beat Haddam-Killingworth in its Class S State Tournament opener before losing to The Sport & Medical Sciences Academy (SMSA) in the second round. The T-Birds finished their season with an overall record of 12-11.
North Branford entered the Class S State Tournament as the No. 19 seed went on the road to face familiar Shoreline Conference foe Haddam-Killingworth in a first round matchup on March 7. The Thunderbirds jumped out to a 21-12 lead at halftime, held off the 14th-seeded Cougars in the second half, and prevailed 50-36 to advance to the second round. Brett Lequire caught fire in the win by dropping in 28 points for the Thunderbirds. Jake Haeckel added eight points and Gianni Lavorgna scored seven in the victory.
In the second round, North Branford went up against No. 3 SMSA in a road game on March 9 and took a 66-36 defeat to end its season. Lequire scored 16 points and Lavorgna added 12 points for North Branford.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The 8th-seeded Thunderbirds were eliminated in the first round of the Division II State Tournament by losing an 8-2 contest against by No. 9 South Windsor at Northford Ice Pavilion on March 7. North Branford went 10-11 for the season.
Brian McKee and Sean McKee scored the two goals for the Thunderbirds, who allowed four goals in the third period of the loss.
