Rosado Goes Top Five in Two Events at Class LL Meet
The East Haven-Wilbur Cross girls’ swimming and diving team competed at the Class LL State Championship at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 16 and finished in 15th place out of 20 schools with a total of 88 points scored.
“It was really fun last night to compete in the Class LL state finals and for some of my younger swimmers to experience their first state final,” Head Coach Dave Oshana said. “I am proud of the whole team and what we were able to accomplish this season. I am looking forward to seeing what we can do next year.”
Junior Laura Rosado was the lone individual to compete for the Yellowjackets. Rosado finished third in the 100-yard butterfly and took fifth in the 100 backstroke. In the butterfly, Rosado made All-State by finishing with a time of 58.02 seconds, which was a few seconds behind the event winner, Kelly Montesi of Greenwich, who clocked in at 54.91. In the backstroke, Rosado’s time of 59.14 was a few ticks behind Ridgefield’s Marcella Maguire, who timed in at 54.87. Rosado qualified for the State Open Championship in both of her events. The meet takes place at Yale University at noon on Saturday, Nov. 19. Rosado had previously made All-SCC with her showings in the butterfly and backstroke at the SCC Championship.
“Laura qualified for the State Open,” Coach Oshana said. “She swam her heart out to make the Open and placed third overall in the 100 fly and fifth overall in the 100 backstroke.”
East Haven-Cross also sent two relay squads to the Class LL Championship. The Yellowjackets’ 200 medley relay team of Ellyn DiVerniero, Syreena Melendez, Rosado, and Gina DiVerniero placed 18th at 2:16.04, while the 400 freestyle relay of Melendez, Gina DiVerniero, Jennyfer Jarrin, and Rosado took 15th at 4:06.46.
“Our relay teams all posted faster times than last Saturday’s State Qualifier meet,” Oshana said. “Some of those times were not quite as fast as our times from the SCC finals, but were still a huge improvement from the beginning of the season.”
