The Haddam-Killingworth football team improved to 4-5 after scoring a 36-20 win over Nonnewaug (1-8) on Nov. 11.

Alex Segaline had a monster game for the Cougars by rushing for 130 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries to go with five receptions for 127 yards and a score. Segaline also grabbed two interceptions, while teammate Trevor Hines had one. Jon Grasso was 5-of-7 passing for 127 yards and one touchdown for the Cougars.

“The kids worked hard this week in practice and put it all together in tonight’s game,” said Head Coach Mike Baklik. “We have a chance to go 5-5 on the season now if we beat a very tough Valley Regional-Old Lyme team, so I told the kids we need to work even harder this week.”

The Cougars finish the year with a game at Valley Regional-Old Lyme (8-1) in Deep River on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m.

Volleyball

Following a first round bye, the 2nd-seeded Cougars took down No. 15 East Catholic 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 25-11, 25-17) in the second round of the Class M State Tournament on Nov. 9. Kate Porter had 38 assists, six kills, and four blocks for HK.

Hosting No. 7 Granby Memorial in the quarterfinal round on Nov. 11, the Cougars took a 3-1 loss (25-23, 25-15, 20-25, 25-19) to finish the year at 21-3 overall.

Boys’ Soccer

No. 17 seed HK shut out No. 16 Aerospace 6-0 in the first round of the Class S State Tournament on Nov. 8. In the second round at top-seeded Old Saybrook on Nov. 10, the Cougars’ season came to an end with a 3-0 loss. HK finished at 9-8-1 on the year.

Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country

HK saw three athletes run at the New England Championship Nov. 12 at Ponaganset High School in Rhode Island on Nov. 12. For the boys, Andrew Meredith finished 30th in a time of 16:08.34, while Dan Schumann was 50th (16:23.70). Kelsey D’Amico came in 70th (19:32.82) to represent the girls.
