HK Field Hockey, Volleyball Win Openers; Football Loses to Old Saybrook-Westbrook
Field Hockey
The Haddam-Killingworth field hockey team opened the year by netting 3-1 home win over North Branford on Sept. 9 in a rematch of last year’s Shoreline Conference Tournament final that was won by the Cougars. In this one, Hannah Theriault, Celia Payfa, and Isabella Cosenza scored the goals for HK, while Tina Miceli assisted on the Theriault tally. Mackenzie Kaiser made four saves in net for the Cougars.
Volleyball
The Cougars’ volleyball squad started the year at 1-0 thanks to a 3-0 sweep of non-conference adversary East Haven in a home match on Sept. 9.
Football
The HK football team opened the 2016 campaign by taking a 41-13 loss versus Pequot Conference South Division opponent Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) on Sept. 10 at Old Saybrook High School.
Leading 14-7 at halftime, the Rams outscored the Cougars 27-6 in the second half. All of OS-W’s offense came on the ground as the Rams did not pass the ball once. Alex Segaline recorded two touchdowns for HK by throwing a 54-yard scoring strike and bringing home 21-yard run. He also led the team with 10 tackles.
Head Coach Mike Baklik noted that Colton Lavoie, a sophomore starting in his first varsity game, “played a solid center on HK’s offensive line.”
“Old Saybrook-Westbrook simply wore us down as the game went on. They’re big up front and [Rams’ running back Chase Cook] is a big, tough runner,” said Baklik. “I would’ve liked to see us fight harder in the second half, but we’ll be working on improving our resiliency in the coming weeks.”
HK next hosts another divisional foe in Morgan (1-0) on Friday, Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m.
Boys’ Soccer
The HK boys’ soccer team took a 3-0 defeat to Old Saybrook at home to open the 2016 season on Sept. 9.
Girls’ Soccer
The Cougars’ girls’ soccer squad dropped a 1-0 decision in Old Saybrook on Sept. 9 to begin their year.
