Madison Junior Legion Preps for States; Seniors Come Up Just Short

The Post 79 Junior Legion baseball team went 13-11 in Zone 3 play to finish in fourth place in the zone. Madison, which notched an overall mark of 19-12 for the regular season, opens play in the double elimination State Tournament on Monday, July 18.
First up last week, Madison recorded 6-0 shutout of Meriden on July 11. Will McIntosh pitched seven innings with four strikeouts. Clay Knibbs was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Madison then won 7-5 against Meriden on July 12 as Ian Butler (getting the win in five frames of work), Brad Cosgriff, and Austin Doyle took to the mound in that one. Knibbs was 2-for-2 with a walk, plus Phoenix Billings hit 2-for-4 with a stolen base and RBI.
Meriden returned the favor with a 3-1 decision over Madison the following day, a game in which McIntosh had two doubles. Michael Scoopo and Kevin Girardi pitched for Post 79, which rebounded with a 13-3 victory versus Merdien to close out the series on July 14. Butler was 2-for-3 and nabbed a double.
Facing Wallingford to close the regular season, Madison lost 5-4 on July 15 and took a 4-1 defeat the next day. In the first Wallingford clash, Will Kleinhenz was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, and then the next day, Butler was 2-for-3 with a duo of stolen bases.
Senior American Legion Baseball
Madison came up just shy of making the State Tournament as Post 79 finished with a record of 11-13 in Zone 3 to place fifth—one spot behind East Haddam, which went 12-12 and was the last team from the zone to qualify.
Madison started last week with a 4-2 win over Meriden on July 11 as Ian Tolis pitched a complete game. Post 79 then won 6-2 over Meriden the next day. Magnus Grigor and Aaron Rubin pitched for Post 79 in that win. Madison followed that by earning a 4-1 win against Meriden on July 13 before taking a 5-3 defeat to Meriden on July 15. Later that day, Post 79 lost 8-5 to Wallingford as Michael Elias (6 innings) and Ryan McAneany (1) pitched for Madison.
Madison concluded the summer 11-13 in Zone 3 and 12-14-1 overall.
