After winning the 110-meter high hurdles at the Shoreline Conference Championship and the Class S state meet, Old Saybrook senior Lucas Sumby took first place in the event again by prevailing at the State Open Championship. Sumby ran the best time of 14.85 seconds for the preliminaries, after which he went a 14.74 in the finals to edge out John Witik of Lyman Hall (15.03) to take the title. Sumby also placed second in the pole vault at the Open. His height of 14 feet was the same as Hand’s Devon McShane, although McShane had cleared the next-best height of 13-6 in fewer attempts and so he came away with the win. Sumby had previously won the vault at the Shoreline and state meets.
Five days after the Open, Sumby competed in both events at the New England Championship at Willow Brook Park in New Britain. Sumby posted the fastest mark of 14.88 in the 110 hurdles prelims, after which he ran 14.81 in the finals to place second behind Nathan Narcisse of Rhode Island (14.57). Sumby also finished eighth in the pole vault by clearing 13-3.
As a team, Old Saybrook finished in eighth place with 21 points at the State Open on June 6 at Willow Brook. In addition to Sumby scoring 18 points with his two finishes, the Rams also received three points from senior Carl Anderson, who placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 166 feet-4 inches. Anderson later placed 17th in New Englands at 141-3.
Other Old Saybrook competitors at the Open were Shane Henderson, who finished 15th in the 1600-meter run (4:34.33); Eric Sultini, who was 21st in the 800-meter run (2:01.03); the 4x400 relay of Aaron Jiang, Quinlen Earles, Austin Reynolds, and Sultini, who placed 26th (3:34.76); the 4x800 of Hunter Stuart, Daniel Baldi, Xavier Rios, and Lance Sigersmith that took 27th (8:54.92); and Alexander VanVliet, who was 20th in the triple jump at 40-11.75.
Girls’ Outdoor Track
On June 6, Old Saybrook sent a few athletes to State Open Championship.
Katie Seegert was the highest finisher for the Rams by coming in ninth in the pole vault at 10 feet. In the 800-meter run, Allison Bruehwiler came in 12th place with a time of 2:21.09. In the 4x800 relay, Jessica Stratton, Jael Givehard, Meghan Delaney, and Tehra Givehand finished 21st, timing in at 10:15.39. Devyn King, Holly Coppes, Tyra Finkeldey, and Vyka Stoltz were 23rd in the 4x100 relay at 51.97.
Golf
On June 7 at Fairview Farms in Harwinton, the Old Saybrook golf team competed in the Division IV State Championship and finished in 11th place with a total score of 354.
Competing for the Rams were Kyle Savino (84), James DePalermo (84), Anthony Karg (93), Dean Nobile (93), and Nick Malinconico (94).
“I am very proud of the Old Saybrook golf team,” Head Coach Tim Payne said. “This is first time in the past three years that we have made states and we counted four sophomore’s scores. We could not have done it without our top six guys always out there pushing the other athletes to play better. Co-captains Kyle Savino and Nick Malinconico should be proud of their ability to lead the team both on and off the course.”
Old Saybrook’s record on the season was 13-8.
