Boys’ Tennis
The Valley boys’ tennis squad had only one match last week versus Portland and prevailed 7-0 at home on April 21. The Warriors took the match with relative ease as Portland arrived with only two players during vacation week and Valley won both matches to improve to 3-2 on the year. Valley’s No. 1 singles player, Jeff Riggio, faced off with Brandon Szabo and won 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. For No. 2 singles, Jason Simoneau defeated Danny Norton 6-3, 6-0.
“Jeff struggled a bit in his first set. Jeff is a player who is accustomed to and likes hard-hit, topspin balls coming at him,” Head Coach Bunny Logan said. “His opponent hits a high, slower ball and it took Jeff a while to get used the different timing and style of play. However, he recovered nicely in the second set.”
Baseball
The Valley baseball team went 1-2 last week by losing to Law and Haddam-Killingworth and then defeating Old Lyme. On April 18, the Warriors hosted non-conference foe Law and lost a close one, 3-2. Next, the Warriors traveled to Haddam-Killingworth and lost another tight game, 4-2, on April 20. Valley bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Old Lyme at home on April 22 to stand at 5-3.
