It was a great week for the Old Saybrook boys’ tennis team as the Rams won all three of their matches versus Shoreline Conference opponents Morgan, Westbrook, and Cromwell. The Rams are now 5-1 on the season.
The week started with a 7-0 victory over Morgan on April 18. In singles, No. 1 player Saba Cecunjanin defeated Tejas Patel 4-6, 6-3, 6-1; No. 2 Danny Capuano bested Mike Murray 6-2 6-3; No. 3 Scott Cabral shut out Austin Remetta 6-0, 6-0; No. 4 Peter Blank won over Kevin LaFrance 6-3, 6-0; and No. 5 Josh Chang defeated Matt Newfield 6-1, 6-2. In doubles, the No. 1 team of Tenzing Kunchok and Jason Rothman defeated Paddy Murray and Chris Nuzzo 6-0, 6-2, while No. 2 Enes Cecunjanin and Kyle Jackson beat Sam Dailey and Garrett Johnson 6-2, 6-2.
Next, the Rams played at rival Westbrook on April 20 and came away with the 6-1 victory. In its third match of the week on April 22, Old Saybrook hosted Cromwell and had another 6-1 triumph.
Girls’ Tennis
The Old Saybrook girls’ squad split its two matches last week by besting Morgan before taking a tough loss to Westbrook to move to 4-2 on the campaign.
First up was a date in Clinton against the Huskies, where Old Saybrook took the match 6-1. In singles play, No. 1 Rosie Rothman lost to Morgan’s Emma Phelps 6-1, 6-2, but the rest of the team won out with No.2 Tanya Gianitsos beating Riley Smith 6-3, 6-1; No. 3 Erin Stangel defeating Gabriela Rodriguez 6-0, 6-3; and No. 4 Isabella Luciani defeating Becca Cockley 6-0, 6-0. The Rams’ doubles teams were all victorious with No. 1 Jess Holmes and Jhismery Jara-Velez defeating Benna Andrews and Lily Cummings 6-2, 7-6; No. 2 Tenzin Miglay and Lucy Marinelli getting the best of Grace Hull and Becca Walton 7-5, 6-1; and No. 3 Jillian Hirst and Kerry Farbotka winning a close one against Yoshveen Rai-Maria Beltran, 7-5, 7-5.
On April 20, Westbrook came to Old Saybrook and recorded a 4-3 win over the Rams. For Old Saybrook, Luciani defeated Katie Xenelis 6-1, 6-3 in singles and, in doubles play, Miglay and Marinelli came out on top against Olivia Fabrizi and Marulyn Ulanowicz 6-1, 7-5, while Farbotka and Jiang won over Keysi Jara and Alyssa Esposito 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.
On April 22, Old Saybrook traveled to Cromwell but the match was postponed due to rain midway through.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The Old Saybrook girls’ lacrosse team won all three of its matchups last week by posting victories over Stonington, Valley Regional, and North Branford. On April 19, Old Saybrook beat non-conference opponent Stonington 10-6 at home. Next was a home date with Shoreline Conference foe Valley Regional April 21. The squads were tied 4-4 at the half, but Old Saybrook broke out after the break with 10 goals to win 14-4. In the final match of the week on April 22, the Rams went on the road and defeated North Branford in a 7-6 thriller. Old Saybrook is on a four-game win streak and owns a mark of 6-2 on the year.
Boys’ Lacrosse
The Old Saybrook boys’ lacrosse team lost its only contest last week against Shoreline Conference foe Valley Regional. On April 21, the Rams went on the road and lost 20-5 to the Warriors and are now 0-6 this spring.
Baseball
The Old Saybrook baseball squad lost two of three games last week against Coginchaug (4-3) and Bacon Academy (9-4), while beating Hale-Ray 20-3. The Rams got their second win of the season by pounding Hale-Ray on April 20 at home and the offensive onslaught was the team’s biggest of the season. The week began with a tough loss at home to Coginchaug, 4-3, and ended with Old Saybrook losing on the road to non-conference team Bacon Academy 9-4. The Rams dropped to 2-7 so far this year.
Softball
It was a tough week for the young Old Saybrook softball team as they Rams lost contests to Coginchaug, North Branford, and Cromwell. On April 19, the Rams went on the road and lost 21-0 to Coginchaug. The following day, Old Saybrook took a 13-1 home loss to North Branford as Sarah Howley had a hit and the only RBI for Old Saybrook. On April 22, the Rams lost at Cromwell 14-2. Old Saybrook is now 2-6 on the season.
