Old Saybrook’s Coppes and Brodeur Swim Well at Class S Championship


Mac Coppes (left) and Will Brodeur swam for Old Saybrook at the Class S State Championship. Coppes placed fourth in the 50 and 100 freestyles, while Brodeur was 10th in the 50 and sixth for the 100.

On March 15, Old Saybrook swimmers Mac Coppes and Will Brodeur competed in the Class S State Championship at Wesleyan University.

Coppes, a junior, placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.49 seconds. Brodeur, a sophomore, came in 10th for the event with a 23.49. Coppes earned 24.5 points on behalf of the Rams, while Brodeur received 17 points for his finish. The winning time of 22.18 was posted by Matt Corona of Holy Cross. Coppes had previously swam a 22.90 in the preliminaries with Brodeur going a 23.94.

In the 100 freestyle, Coppes scored 25 more points for Old Saybrook as he again finished fourth with a time of 49.99. Brodeur placed sixth at 51.69 and scored 23 points. Corona also won that event with a time of 48.86. Coppes and Brodeur had previously recorded marks of 50.79 and 51.32 in the prelims, respectively.

Overall, Old Saybrook finished 17th out of 30 squads with a total of 89.5 points. Weston was the meet’s team champion by totaling 833.5 points.
