03/10/2016 11:00 PMThe Haddam-Killingworth Middle School swim team competed in the 2016 Connecticut Middle School Swimming and Diving Open Championship on Jan. 30 at Southern Connecticut State University. The boys’ team finished first overall and broke three state records. Additionally, the girls’ team placed fifth and helped the Cougars finish third overall in the combined boys’ and girls’ standings. HK’s head coach is Samantha Sierpinski and the assistant coaches are Jamie Sierpinski and Mary Kate Almeida.
The boys’ 200 medley relay of Kyle Mazziotti, Andrew Mitchell, Drew Donlan, Zach Houlton was first with a state record time of 1:51.73. Mazziotti also set a new state mark in the 100 freestyle by finishing first in 51.82. Mitchell was fifth (56.89), Dylan Craig was seventh (59.88), and Adam Anziano was 10th (1:03.90) for that event. HK’s third state record came in the 50 backstroke with Mazziotti (27.57) finishing in first. Jimmy Clemente was ninth in this race (34.51).
Also for the boys, the 400-yard freestyle relay of Mazziotti, Donlan, Malone Revis, and Mitchell prevailed in 3:43.41; Donlan (1:02.79), Revis (1:04.30), and Christo Garrelts were first, second, and seventh, respectively for the 100 individual medley; Mitchell (31.01), Houlton (35.76), and Craig finished first, fifth, and sixth in the 50 breaststroke; the 200 free relay in Houlton, Garrelts, Craig, and Revis was runner-up (1:44.89); Donlan was third (27.81) in the 50 butterfly, along with Revis (6th, 29.40), Clemente (12th, 32.16), and Noah SanVicente (13th, 32.83); plus Houlton (25.59) and Garrelts (26.20) came in fourth and sixth with the 50 free.
On the girls’ side, Jackie Flaherty was eighth for the 100 IM (1:14.93); the 200 free relay in Rhianna Phipps, Carly Rettberg, Tara Lamb, and Katie Matthews was sixth (2:08.05); Tara Lamb was sixth in the 50 breaststroke (41.58); Matthews finished 12th in the 50 backstroke (37.49); for the 50 butterfly, Flaherty was seventh (32.46) and Brianna Lane was 12th (33.59); the 400 free relay of Lane, Matthews, Nina Lamb, and Flaherty was fourth (4:38.39); and the 200 medley relay in Flaherty, Nina Lamb, Lane, and Tara Lamb finished sixth (2:18.88).
