Haddam-Killingworth finished second out of 26 teams with 65 points at the Class S State Championship on Feb. 12 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven as Bloomfield won with 84 points. The Cougars’ day was highlighted by wins from Cameron Garrelts in the 1,600 (time of 4:27.95) and 3,200 (9:50.28), along with the 4x800 relay of Michael Callis, Jonah Spector, Andrew Meredith, and Ben Rakowski (8:29.95).
Also scoring for HK was Rakowski (4th in the 600, 1:26.75); Garrelts (runner-up in the 1,000, 2:39.42); Meredith (3rd in the 1,600, 4:32.76; 3rd in the 3,200, 10:00.51); Spector (5th in the 3,200, 10:05.78); the 4x400 of Shahzaib Khalid, Lucian Afragola, Ryan Argo, and Rakowski (2nd, 3:36.89); and the 1,600 sprint medley relay of Nicholas Formica, Khalid, Argo, and Callis (6th, 3:54.88).
Girls’ Indoor Track
The Cougars scored 32 points and finished fourth out of 26 teams for the Class S State Championship on Feb. 12 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
Maddie Brandon took fourth place in the 1,600 (time of 5:25.98), Mary Coletti finished third in the 3,200 (11:38.59), plus Brandon was fifth (11:39.98) and Kelsey D’Amico finished sixth (11:46.11) in that same event. The 4x400 relay of Julianne Kelly, Sara Blanton, Megan Little, and Jackie Stephens finished fourth (4:21.01); the 4x800 in Coletti, D’Amico, Lexie Bouthillier, and Brandon was runner-up (10:03.96); Adrienne Schultz was third in the pole vault (9-0); and Veronica Chrzanowski finished sixth in the long jump (16-1).
Ice Hockey
Lyman Hall/HK/Coginchaug dropped to 8-5-2 with a 5-1 loss to Amity on Feb. 10. Hunter Boileau scored for the Trojans and Zach O’Toole made 28 saves.
The Trojans then moved to 9-5-2 with a 3-1 win over Masuk on Feb. 13. Boileau, Chris Blanchard, and Kyle Roberts scored, while Jack O’Brien and Markus Trahan recorded assists. O’Toole notched 18 stops.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
HK moved to 1-10 with defeats to Lyman Hall (93-83) on Feb. 9 and East Lyme (95.5-71.5).
Against Lyman Hall, the Cougars had 18 top-three finishes by taking second in the 200 medley relay (Jake Torello, Will Carlson, Evan Stock, Jacques Goosen); second for the 200 free (Allison Murphy); third with the 200 IM (Evan Stock); second (Chad Anderegg) and third (Goosen) in the 50 free; second (Stock) and third (Anderegg) in the 100 butterfly; second (Michael Morman) and third (Will Carlson) in the 100 free; first in 500 free (Murphy); second for the 200 free relay (Anderegg, Morman, Murphy, and Stock); first (Torello) and third (Morman) in the 100 backstroke; first (Will Carlson), second (Parker Goodwin), and third (Nate Carlson) in the 100 breaststroke; and first (Goosen, Murphy, Anderegg, and Will Carlson) and second (Jonah Freeman, Nate Carlson, Goodwin, and Torello) in the 400 free relay.
“Outstanding performance by HK that demonstrated the team’s hard work thus far is paying off. Jacques Goosen and Chad Anderegg showed again their consistency and strength in the 50 free with a second- and third-place combo for the team,” said Head Coach John MacDonald. “Evan Stock would join Anderegg for another 2-3 combo in the 100 butterfly. Mike Morman and Will Carlson had a close race for first place [in the 100 freestyle], separated by only a few seconds. Both followed up with another second and third-place finish. Allison Murphy took her second top finish in the 500 free of the season.”
There were 11 top-three finishes for HK versus East Lyme with first in the 200 medley relay (Torello, Will Carlson, Stock, Goosen); third for the 200 IM (Evan Stock); runner-up with the 50 free (Morman); second for the 100 butterfly (Stock); second for the 100 free (Morman); first for the 200 free relay (Anderegg, Morman, Stock, and Torello); first for the 100 backstroke (Torello); first (Will Carlson), second (Goodwin), and third (Nate Carlson) in the 100 breaststroke; and tops for the 400 free relay (Torello, Murphy, Anderegg, and Will Carlson).
“Strong swims from start to finish by HK. Michael Morman tied for second in the 50 free with a time of 26.19, but ensured he would officially take second in the 100 free by beating third by over three seconds,” said MacDonald. “Jake Torello anchored the 200 free relay to help secure first and then immediately went into the 100 backstroke to take first in that event, as well. Simon Brown would go a season-best in the 50 free with a time of 33.24.”
