Branford-East Haven-North Branford Girls’ Hockey Takes Three
Girls’ Ice Hockey
Branford-East Haven-North Branford (Bfd-EH-NB) had a busy week in which it won three of its four games to improve to 6-7. The squad beat Lauralton Hall 7-1, edged out Notre Dame-Fairfield/Foran 3-2, took a 2-1 defeat to Stamford-Westhill-Staples, and then downed West Haven-Sacred Heart Academy 5-1.
Against Lauralton, Morgan Odice scored two goals, Julia Schatz and Sydney Hogan each had a goal with an assist, Emmy Norton had three assists with Emilia Wilkinson handing out two; Anne Pascale, Alycia Ferretti, and Jakie DaRos scored goals; plus Maddy Rowe and goalie Hailey Manware each had an assist.
In the victory versus Notre Dame-Fairfield Foran, Hogan had two assists and also scored the game-winning goal in the third period for Bfd-EH-NB, which was further bolstered by two goals with an assist from Norton, an assist by Wilkinson, plus a great game in goal from Julia SanGiovanni.
Playing outdoors on the road against Stamford-Westhill-Staples, SanGiovanni had another great night in the narrow defeat. Norton scored the club’s lone goal on helpers from Schatz and Hogan.
Jack Norton and Lauren Wiggins’s team then capped the week by defeating West Haven-Sacred Academy. Norton and Hogan both scored two goals with an assist, plus Wilkinson, Schatz, and Brianna Raccio each contributed one assist. SanGiovanni collected another victory in goal for Bfd-EH-NB.
Girls’ Basketball
The Yellowjackets improved to 11-3 with a 63-47 victory over Amity on Jan. 25. After a slow first half in which it scored just 21 points, East Haven exploded for 24 in the third and 18 in the fourth. Miranda Gladwin scored a team-high 18 points, while Kylie Schlottman recorded another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Also putting forth great contributions in the win were Olivia Coyle with 12 points, Dana Ross with nine points and nine boards, plus Cailey Korwek with five points and five assists.
Boys’ Basketball
East Haven played a pair of nail-biters and ended up splitting its games against two teams from Wallingford last week. The Easties moved to 5-8 overall following a 53-50 overtime loss to Lyman Hall on Jan. 26 and a 55-52 victory over Sheehan on Jan. 28.
In the loss to the Trojans, both squads were knotted at 48 at the end of regulation after Lyman Hall outscored East Haven 18-11 in the fourth quarter. Conor Reynolds and Nick Durso both scored 12 points in the loss and Ryan Spano added nine.
East Haven bounced back nicely with the tight win over Sheehan behind a stellar night from three-point land. The Yellowjackets buried seven from beyond the arc with Durso connecting on three and finishing with a game-high 19 points. Reynolds scored 15 points in the win with Jeramiah Cureton scoring nine, Zack Zito adding six, and Spano also scoring six.
Wrestling
East Haven topped Amity 44-26 on Jan. 26 as the Yellowjackets won in eight weight classes and surrendered losses in just six. Winners by pin were James Vitagliano in the 152-pound weight class at 3:17, Codey Borchert at 182 in 1:59, and Justin Fonacier at 220 at the 3:55 mark of his bout. Antonio Lieto won an 18-7 decision at 113, Joe Milano won 16-4 at 120, plus Long Trinh (138), Danny Jarrin (170), and Tim Seksinski (195) all won by way of forfeit.
