11/06/2015 11:00 PMThe North Haven Youth Football Flag Division championship was decided on Halloween in a game that matched No. 2 seed Dick’s Sporting Goods against top-seeded Sports Plus. The No. 1 seed came away with the win as Sports Plus won by the score of 25-6.
The two teams had met twice during the regular season and so this game proved the tiebreaker between the squads. In mid-September, Sports Plus came out on top in a hard-fought, 14-6 contest. Then in early October, Dick’s Sporting Goods pulled out a last-second victory, 7-6, handing Sports Plus its only loss of the season. Both teams then kicked their offenses into high gear as they combined for a total of 58 points in the first week of the playoffs.
The teams came in fired up and ready to play in front of a large crowd on a gorgeous fall day for football at the North Haven Indians’ home of Vanacore Field. Sports Plus scored twice in the first half and took a 13-0 lead into halftime. Two scores in the third quarter put Sports Plus up 25-0 before Dick’s Sporting Goods got on the board, bringing the game to 25-6 when the final whistle blew.
The Sports Plus offensive and defensive backfields were led all year by Joe Mastroianni, Jimmy Marshall, Ben Pizzano, Cody Vanacore, and Luca Faulkner. The offensive line blocked hard and opened holes for the running backs all season, anchored by Nathan Testa, Nick Rivera, CJ Faulkner, Joey Maciejko, Logan Jeffery, Zach Thomas, and Vincent Fratta. The defensive line burst through gaps and tracked down ball carriers every game and was paced by Sean Perrotti, Jack Hartley, Colton Kennealy, Griffin McCarthy, and Evan DiMauro. Sports Plus was coached by Charlie Faulkner, Kerri Kennealy, Ed DiMauro, and Steven Testa.
The team’s coaching staff also sends congratulations to all the players and coaches from Pool & Patio and Williston Electric on their great seasons.
