Guilford Volleyball Gets to a Dozen Wins; Boys’ Soccer Now 7-1-1
Volleyball
The Indians moved to 10-1 with a 3-0 sweep of Hamden on Oct. 5 before another shutout against Cross on Oct. 7 and then repeated that feat versus Lauralton Hall on Oct. 9 to go to 12-1.
Versus Hamden, the scores read 25-17, 25-16, 25-16 for Guilford. Offensively, Cia Mirrione and Meredith Shank each had eight kills, while Natalie Stanton had six. On the defensive end, Sam Shank punched up nine digs and Caroline Wienkamp added seven to go along with her 25 assists. Amanda King fired nine aces on serves, plus Mirrione had half a dozen.
Against Cross, Guilford prevailed 25-10, 25-10, 25-18. Wienkamp had fives aces and 16 assists; Mirrione tacked on five aces and five kills; Meredith Shank netted five kills and four digs; plus Natalie Stanton had four kills.
In the Lauralton Hall matchup, Meredith Shank had 10 kills and 14 digs; Amanda King added five kills and nine digs; plus Jill Wirth contributed on 16 assists and five digs.
Boys’ Soccer
After a 1-0 win over Xavier on Oct. 6, the Indians blanked North Haven 4-0 on Oct. 9.
In the Xavier win, Brendan Thompson scored (78’) off a header from a cross from Ben Rattet.
Facing North Haven, Sean Miller netted a hat trick with scores at 20:00 (from Dan Ciocca), 33:00 (from Nick Bonelli), and 37:00 (also from Bonelli). Ben Cousins also found the back of the net at 55:00. Guilford outshot North Haven 10-5, while Colin Brocksieper made three saves for Guilford (7-1-1).
Boys’ Cross Country
Guilford competed at the Wickham Park Invitational on Oct. 10 and took second out of 33 teams, barely missing out on first to Manchester, which scored 186 points to Guilford’s 188. First for Guilford was Ben Siciliano, who took runner-up and also led for part of the race, finishing with a time of 16:22. He was followed by Finn Davidson (15th in 17:09) and Josh Stern (20th; 17:23). Rounding out the top five were Lukas O’Callahan (65th in 18:10) and Adam Germaine (90th in 18:28). Also racing for Guilford in 156th place was Will Smith in 19:16 and he was followed by Ian Sessions 210th in 20:28.
“The boys all ran a great race. Our top five all ran personal bests at Wickham, which is our state [championship] course. I know we still have a lot of work to do, but I am happy with where the boys are right now and how much they have improved over the course of the season,” said Head Coach Jon Rivera. “We have a big meet for the division on Friday, Oct. 16 at Eisenhower Park in Milford against defending division champion Foran and Daniel Hand.”
Football
Guilford hosted Sheehan on Oct. 10 and took a 48-33 loss to move to 1-4 on the fall.
Jack Jankura (7-of-17 passing for 125 yards, rushing for 216 yards on 18 carries) tossed two touchdown passes and ran for three on the ground. Following a scoreless first quarter, the Titans went ahead 7-0 on a 32-yard connection. The Indians then responded with an 81-yard TD rush by Jankura. Following another scoring reception from Sheehan, Guilford tied the game at 13 with a 2-yard scamper by Ben Currier. The visitors headed to the locker room up 20-13 thanks to a 35-yard TD toss. In the third, Sheehan reached paydirt on two occasions with 82 and 52-yard hookups before also earning a safety on a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone. Down 36-13 entering the final frame, Guilford’s Casey Huffman (4 catches, 80 yards) reeled in a 29-yard throw from Jankura to score, but then Sheehan ran one in from 10 yards for a touchdown. After Jankura sprinted 52 yards for six, Sheehan ran 27 yards for another score. Jankura later rushed the ball in from nine yards for the game’s final touchdown. The Indians had 424 yards of total offense. On defense, Brett Skapcyzynski had a sack, while Evan Hilgert caused a fumble. Jack Six was Guilford’s leading tackler with a dozen, plus Nick Moscato added 11. Guilford next hosts non-conference opponent Fitch (3-1) on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
Field Hockey
Guilford lost 3-1 at Hand on Oct. 5 before a 4-1 defeat to Lauralton Hall on Oct. 7. Rihana Zergiebel gave the Indians a 1-0 halftime lead with a goal at 3:07 for the opening half before the Tigers scored on three occasions after intermission. Hand outshot Guilford 16-3 with Brooke Misbach making 13 saves. The Indians then shut out Lyman Hall on 8-0 to close the week. Guilford is now 5-4-1 overall and 3-2 in games that count toward the SCC standings.
