Westbrook Girls’ Soccer Gets First Win
On Oct. 10, Westbrook girls’ soccer earned its first win of the year by prevailing 2-1 versus the Metropolitan Learning Center.
Westbrook was inspired by words of wisdom from class of 2015 graduates Lydia Murphy, a former Knights’ field hockey captain who goes to Central Connecticut; plus Angelina Raffone, a captain for Westbrook soccer, basketball, and tennis who attends Babson College. The two urged the young Knights to stay positive, continue working hard, and they would be rewarded for their efforts.
In the first half, sophomore Erin Metcalfe’s shot rebounded off the Dragon’s goalie and junior co-captain Adara Bochanis scored off a ricochet. It was Westbrook’s first lead of the season. MLC tied it at 1-1 shortly before halftime.
Metcalfe’s goal 30 seconds into the second half would be the difference in the game as it put Westbrook up 2-1. Metcalfe dribbled past four Dragon defenders before perfectly placing a shot to the far post from 16 yards out. It was all sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Fabrizi needed to preserve the win as she made four second-half saves. Freshman Kelly Donlan and sophomore Marily Ulanowicz played very well on defense and helped with the offensive attack, as well. Sophomore Ruby Asby was a super sub in both halves by playing multiple positions. Senior co-captain Anna Schneider controlled the midfield on both sides of the ball, playing with an urgency that was badly needed to help close out the game.
Earlier in the week, Westbrook lost to Cromwell (6-0) and Haddam-Killingworth (5-0). The Knights are 1-9 on the season.
