HK Girls’ Soccer Ties Class S Champ Portland; Field Hockey Blanks Morgan


Katie Hausherr had a goal and an assist as HK field hockey shut out rival Morgan 4-0 on Sept. 16.

Girls’ Soccer

Haddam-Killingworth played to a 1-1 tie against defending Class S state champion Portland for its home opener on Sept. 18 to move to 0-1-1. Portland scored at the 39:35 mark of the contest to take a 1-0 halftime lead. Emily Roth then netted the equalizer at 42:39 on an assist from Abby Shultz. The Cougars were outshot 10-7 with Tevi Ferguson making four saves.

Field Hockey

HK improved to 2-0 with a road 4-0 win over Morgan on Sept. 16.

Brinley Anderson scored unassisted 27 seconds into the game off Morgan netminder Sofia Siagnano’s pads. With HK up 1-0 at the half, the Cougars padded their lead. Julie Hausherr put one home with 20:13 left and was assisted by Katie Hausherr. Anderson scored with 9:24 remaining (assist to Julie Hausherr) and then Katie Hausherr netted one on a corner play that assisted by Julie Hausherr and Anderson. HK outshot Morgan 15-1 with Meghan Cerino stopping that lone Huskies’ shot.

Football

The Cougars hosted North Branford on Sept. 18 and took a 28-6 loss to drop to 0-2.

North Branford opened up a 21-0 lead in the second quarter against HK, although the Cougars cut the lead to 21-6 on the last play of the half with Alex Segaline’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Mann.

Neither team scored in the third quarter. Matt Chamberlain put the game away for the Thunderbirds late in the game with a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Segaline was 9-of-21 for 64 yards passing for the Cougars. Christos Lavelle led the HK rushing attack with 47 yards on 10 carries.
