Madison’s Russell Named to Patriot League’s 25th Anniversary Lacrosse Team
Seven men’s lacrosse standouts who competed at the United States Naval Academy were named to the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse 25th Anniversary Team on Sept. 7 and included on that squad was Madison’s Matt Russell.
Russell, who played for Navy from 2003 through 2006, is one of the most decorated players in school’s history. Russell was a three-time All-American who was the 2004 recipient of the Ens. C. Markland Kelly Award, which is presented to the nation’s best goalkeeper in the entire NCAA. He is one of just seven different players in school history to win the award. A three-time First-Team All-Patriot League selection, Russell was also named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year in 2004, 2005, and 2006. He helped orchestrate Navy’s defensive units that were ranked No. 2 in the country in 2004 (allowing just 6.63 goals a game), while leading the nation in 2005 (6.63) and 2006 (5.47). Russell stood No. 2 in the country in goals-against average in 2004 (6.69) and ‘05 (6.68) before posting the nation’s top mark as a senior with a 5.45. Russell closed out his career ranked ninth in the Navy record book for career saves (380) and went on to the United States Marine Corps, serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
