05/23/2015 12:00 AMNorthford resident and Thunderbirds’ sophomore Peyton Joiner recently defended her crown as the state vault champion with a score of 9.75. Joiner, who competes for New Era Gymnastics in Hamden, placed first on vault, fourth on bars, sixth on beam, fourth on floor, and second in the all-around with a score of 37.00 at the recent state meet. This score qualified Joiner for the Connecticut State Regional Team, a squad that features the top seven gymnasts in the state. This marks the second-straight season Joiner was named to a regional team. Last season, she made the Regional All-Stars, which is one level lower than the level team she made this season. Joiner will next compete in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts against gymnasts from around New England states on Sunday, May 31.
