Valley Baseball Goes Through Some Struggles; Golf Wins Four Straight

Baseball

After scoring 21 runs in a game back on May 7, the Warriors have only scored 13 in their last five games and have lost all five. Most recently, Valley took a 2-0 loss to North Branford on May 18 and then a 4-3 defeat versus Coginchaug in nine innings.

The Warriors have a record of 13-6 and are currently the No. 4 seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament. Valley stands at 9th in the Class S rankings.

Golf

Valley is getting hot as the postseason draws closer with a timely four-match winning streak. The Warriors held a tri-match and defeated Hale-Ray 169-182 and Old Lyme 169-193 on May 18. Valley played the following day and beat North Branford 175-211 to become 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the Shoreline Conference.

Joe diTommasso lead Valley with a score of 38. Tyler Boland added a 43, Keegan Bauman and Justin Craco each shot a 44, and Dylan Pellitier got a 47 in the duel against the Little Noises and Wildcats.

Girls’ Tennis

The Warriors have earned 13-straight triumphs, most recently posting wins over Haddam-Killingworth (4-3) on May 18 and a doubleheader sweep of Cromwell with both by scores of 7-0 on May 20.

Valley was 16-1 heading into a battle with Westbrook for the top spot in the Shoreline Conference and will play in the conference tournament on May 27 and 28, followed by the Class S State Tournament.

Softball

Valley needed to win its final two games, both against teams from the Eastern Connecticut Conference, to advance to play in the state tournament. In a home match against Montville on May 21, the Warriors lost 10-8, eliminating the team from the postseason.

Valley trailed 4-3 after the end of the first inning and the Indians extended their lead to 7-3 with a three-run top of the second inning. Valley answered back with three runs of their own for a 7-6 deficit. Montville racked up three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to lead 10-6, but the Warriors countered with two in the bottom frame to trail by two runs, 10-8. Both teams were held scoreless in the final two innings and Valley lost in its last home game of the season. The team posted 14 hits, one shy of Montville’s 15 hits in the game.

Jill Cayer went 2-for 5 with a double and scored two runs; Alex Figuenick was 3-for-5 with a run scored, a double and three-RBI; Kaleigh Caulfied was 3-for-5 with a run tallied and two RBI; and Paige Lacasse went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Julia Jenkins also added a double.

The Warriors concluded their season with a road duel at Plainfield on May 23.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Valley played its last home match of the season, hosting Old Saybrook on May 21, and lost 16-4.

Britta McCarthy and Julia Hammond each scored twice for the Warriors (1-13).

Valley traveled to play at Montville on May 23 and had its final match at Haddam-Killingworth on May 27.

Valley senior Justin Craco shot a 44 in the team’s wins over Hale-Ray and Old Lyme.
