Rams' Girls' Track Wins Tri-Meet


Old Saybrook senior Mahlah Givehand took second place in the 1,600-meter sprint medley in the team’s victory over Portland and North Branford.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Old Saybrook traveled to Portland to face the host Panthers and the Thunderbirds of North Branford at a tri-meet and the Rams were victorious in defeating both squads. The Rams scored 101 against the 78 posted by Portland and 49 by the Thunderbirds.

Rams’ junior Katie Seegert won the 100-meter hurdles (17.75), junior Meghan Delaney won the 1600 (5:54.4), sophomore Devyn King took the 300 hurdles (54.0) and long jump (14-6), senior Kiran Khosla won the 800 (2:33.8), sophomore Kendra Millspaugh won both the shot put (26-8.25) and discus (81-3), and sophomore Alexis Parker took first in the javelin (71-2).

Old Saybrook senior Mahlah Givehand finished second in the 1,600 (6:01.6), freshman Allison Bruehwiler placed second in the 400 (67.5), sophomore Holly Coppes was second in the 300 hurdles (56.1), junior Hayley Brodeur was second in the 200 (29.4), senior Sophia D’Ambrosi placed second in shot put (24-4), and sophomore Marissa Newell was second in javelin (67-4).

Softball

Old Saybrook went 1-2 this past week with a 5-0 loss in six innings to North Branford on April 22; a 13-3 landslide over Cromwell on April 24 and a 24-4 loss in five innings to Coginchaug.

The Rams smashed in 16 hits against Cromwell. Senior Tina Gosselin went 4-for-5, hit a two-run home run, and scored three runs; plus senior Emily Santamaria went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored; and freshman Carly Michaud went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Gosselin also picked up her third win on the year on the mound.

Against the Thunderbirds, the Rams were held to four hits: two by senior Lauren Pascoe and one by Gosselin and sophomore Kirsten King.

Pascoe added two hits, a double, a RBI and two runs scored in the loss to Coginchaug.

Girls’ Tennis

The Rams extended their winning streak to four after knocking out Morgan, 5-1, in weather-shortened contest on April 22, but had it snapped with a 5-2 loss to Westbrook.

In the road triumph versus the Huskies, sophomore Rosie Rothman (6-1, 6-0), senior Katie Costa (6-4, 6-1) and sophomore Isabella Luciani (2-6, 6-0, 6-2) won No. 2 through No. 4 singles, respectively. Rams duos seniors Ashley Savino-Emily Sheehan (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) and junior Tanya Gianitsos and senior Jennifer Forte (6-1, 6-2) won at No. 1 and No. 2 matches, respectively. The pair of senior Avery Adams and sophomore Erin Stangel had their match rained out, but lead 6-0, 5-1.

Facing the Knights, Gianitson-Forte at No. 2 doubles (6-2, 6-1) and Adams-Stangel at No. 3 doubles (6-4, 6-1) won the two points for the Rams.

Golf

The Rams lost their first two matches of the season, losing close at Wheeler, 214-220, on April 21 and losing to Valley Regional, 172-191, at their home course at Fenwick Golf Course.

Old Saybrook sophomore Nick Sheehan shot a team-best 42; freshman James DePalermo scored a 45; junior Nick Malinconico shot a 47 and freshman Kyle Savino had a 57 in the home match against the Warriors.
