Yellowjackets’ Spring Season in Full Swing

Baseball

East Haven is off to a rocky start to the 2015 season as it lost its opening three games—all at home to SCC foes in Hand, Fairfield Prep, and Branford.

On April 8 against Hand, East Haven was defeated 8-5. Dan Petr took the loss on the mound as he allowed seven runs (six earned) through four innings with five strikeouts. Mike DeAngelo had the big hit of the day for the Easties by launching a three-run home run in the first inning.

The very next day, Fairfield Prep got the better of East Haven, 9-1.

In its first SCC Oronoque game of the season, East Haven was topped by Branford 10-2 on April 11. John Kikosicki hit a home run and had two RBI for the Yellowjackets (0-3, 0-1). Antonio Cancel was the losing pitcher on the hill.

Softball

The Yellowjackets started their campaign with back-to-back losses last week. Foran came into East Haven on April 8 and walked out with a 12-6 victory and then the Yellowjackets were defeated by Mercy 11-9 on the road the day after.

Against Foran, East Haven pitching allowed 18 hits and its fielders committed three errors in allowing the 12 runs. Junior Laura Anderson pitched 4.1 innings, giving up nine runs (eight earned) and then freshman Selena Mauro allowed three runs in 2.2 innings in her debut performance. At the dish, freshman Jessica Stettinger, senior Jena Villecco, and junior Kara Hanson had two hits each. Villecco and Hanson both scored twice and Hanson also knocked home two runs. Other RBI were picked up by Stettinger, junior Ali Esposito, and junior Alyssa Barcomb.

Against Mercy, the Yellowjackets got out to a quick start and were leading 7-0 after two innings. East Haven was unable to hold Mercy at bay, however, as the Tigers scored three runs in the third inning, two in the fourth, two in the fifth, and four in the sixth to take the lead and seal the victory. On the mound, Hanson went the distance, allowing the 11 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits with three walks. East Haven committed four errors in the field.

At the plate, junior Allison Luzzi led the team with four hits and Stettinger and Hanson both had three. Villecco knocked home a team-high three runs on two hits, plus freshman Julia SanGiovanni had two RBI on a triple. Junior Laura Anderson had two hits and an RBI and Barcomb and Hanson had an RBI each.

Boys’ Tennis

West Haven got the better of East Haven on April 9 with a 6-1 victory. The Yellowjackets’ win came from the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Anthony Perrotti and Rob Proto. They defeated Kevin Coyle and Luiz Alvarez 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4. In other doubles action, the No. 2 team of Marty Lendroth and Noah Fiorillo was defeated 6-1, 6-3 and the No. 3 squad of Adam Perrotti and Seth Proto got topped 6-2, 6-1.

In singles action, Connor Brown lost at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0; Tony CoFrancesco lost at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1; Zack Zito was defeated at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2,; and Jeff Capone lost at No. 4, 6-1, 6-1.

Girls’ Tennis

East Haven started its season with a 6-1 loss to Law on April 9 with the lone individual win coming at No. 2 singles by senior Natalia Wiszniewski. She defeated Megan Gleason 6-3, 6-4 to earn her first singles victory of the year. In other singles action, senior captain Tori Carlson lost at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1; senior Donita Caniesos was defeated at No. 3, 7-5, 6-2; and sophomore Karla Gonzalez took a 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot.

In doubles play, junior Sarah Harkins and sophomore Juliana Mikulski were defeated at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1; juniors Toni Julianelle and Rachel Korwek lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2; and, in No. 3 action, juniors Giselle Ramirez and Magana lost 6-1, 6-1.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Yellowjackets began 2015 with a 90.5-59.5 loss to rival Branford on April 8. They came away with victories in six different events, including a relay. Junior Megan Kikosicki scored the most points as she was a part of the winning 4x100 relay squad and also and won in the 100, 200, and 400. In the 100, Kikosicki posted a time of 12.8, in the 200 she sprinted to a time of 27.9, and, in the 400, she won with a time of 67.7. The 4x100 relay team of Briana Weil, Kikosicki, Annie Coleman, and Sydney Marquardt raced to a time of 53.0. In the throwing events, Samantha Marquardt won the shot put at 28 feet-4 inches and the discus with a distance of 73-7.
